My SFG and container garden...

Its my wife and I's first year gardening... read ANSFG and was hooked.. quickly ran out of space in the beds so we decided to experiment with some other methods until we add more beds for next year... Finally got around to taking some pictures, also have a time lapse camera snapping shots so should have a few videos later in the season. Let me know what you think of our newb garden...



First of 3 SFG beds and some smaller pepper plants in pots. This bed has peppers of several different kinds, basil, and tomatoes - Yellow Pear, Tomaccio, Sun Gold, and San Marzano. This year all the tomatoes are nursery-bought transplants, but some of the peppers and basil were started from seed.



Closer shot of the SFG Tomatoes. I may have been too adventurous with the double sided trellis, but I am willing to accept fate shall it go badly...



Bed 2 - Sun Gold Tomatoes, Lemon Boy, Supersweet 100, and a Brandywine. Several more pepper plants, the worst looking ones were seedlings I think I did not let harden off. Parsely bought from nursery, and nursery bought collard transplants.



Bed 3 - Sugar Snap Peas growing like crazy despite the heat, 3 types of beans, Romaine Lettuce (These were seedlings I thought had gotten too leggy, there were 4, 1 died from damp off, the other got beaten too badly by the wind), Nantes Carrots, Marigolds, Parsley from seed, another collard, cauliflower (erm... disregard the 3 in one square... noob planting error) - not visible are spinach doing OK despite the weather, and bright lights chard that has been mostly eaten by some animal.

Front porch herb garden - oregano, lemon thyme, corsican mint, sage, summer thyme, rosemary. Still need to finish potting some of those.




Container garden "experiment". Rutgers tomatoes, cucumbers, squash, more peppers... Not shown: Celebrity and Mr Stripey tomatoes. I am hoping things go well for this year, but next year these things will be in SFG beds for sure...

The only fertlizers I have used have been a little bit of fish emulsion and some tomato tone for the tomatoes and peppers...so far so good...

I have the same boxes that you do. The company has phenominal Customer Service---have you checked out their website? They have connector pieces to add the beds together so you don't have to use double boards there in the middle of where your beds are touching. You could take those boards out and extend your gardens next year! They also have free clips for stacking the beds.

I would label that excellent outcome so far.

Thanks! And agreed on the customer service - these were closeout SFG branded beds from Home Depot - last 3 they had. One was missing its corner and they sent us a replacement, we got it 2 days later. It was only after we had the boxes filled and the trellis setup that I discovered the connector... will probably do that for next year.

We are thinking about using cinder blocks for the next set of boxes, using the holes for flowers and/or strawberries....

We have other members who use cinderblocks to build their beds and they seem to be very happy with the results.
