My 1st container garden 2014
Got everything ready to plant today although since it's still unseasonably cool here in Quebec i'll wait at least another week before planting most of the stuff

This is the "big picture" I like the location, it'll be in the sun most of the day!

Those are my potato buckets, since i don't make wine anymore, I re-purposed a couple of wine fermenters, I also used and old 5gal bucket i had laying around the shed.

I also re purposed another fermenter, that one with a faucet, as a rain water collector
Thank you for looking, tips and comments are welcomed and appreciated!

Onions

Garlic (3 squares X9)

More spuds!

And here is my lovely assistant Florence, the reason i started gardening, we's been doing it together since she was 4!

here's what the garden looks like now...I move the potatoes ahead so they'd get more sun..the black container has my oinions...it's a bit deep for onions, I think next year i'm going to use it for MORE POTATOES!!!

CHEERS FOR NOW!

Looks like you're moving right along, Jeff! And your assistant is lovely and looks like she's really enjoying herself. What are the temps like in your area?

Re: My 1st container garden 2014
Well all the planting is done for now, I wish i could say all i have to do now is sit a watch it grow but i still have to build my trellis for the peas and beans and a ton of work in the yard that as been really neglected by the old occupants!
Cucs and tomatoes went in, since we only moved here in February I didn't have time to plant seeds so we bought those at the nursery

Potatoes are coming along...it just started really warming up here

And I got me some nice compost tea brewing to kick start everything!!

That's it for now! As usualy, all tips, comments or questions are welcomed!!!
Cheers!

Re: My 1st container garden 2014
Wow, that's a lotta maters jammed into a tight space, and with little in the way of support for once they get higher than those cages. Are you planning to single stem them? Otherwise, I can see the box getting so bushy that the tomatoes in the middle would be very hard to get to without damaging the tomatoes on the outside.
And their being that close will encourage disease. If it were me, once the plants had grown tall enough to support it, I would trim the side branches off the main stem(s) for about a foot from the ground, just to encourage some air circulation.

Re: My 1st container garden 2014
If you put them in as early as possible, there's less chance to damage roots than if you put them in later. And they have all that much longer to set up tight as the soil settles.
And can you just drive them in while leaving the cages where they are?
P.S.: I like to interweave extras of some of the smaller stakes, like the plastic kind that are about as big around as a finger, with the edges or crossbars of the cages sometimes, also sometimes using string to tie the cages to those stakes. I tend not to trust tomato cages to carry much weight or bear up under the wind well once there are a lot of tomatoes on the plants.

also I haven't put any cages on the last row, i was going to put only tutors...think it's enough? I got like 50 tomato cages that the old owner left in the basement

I'm not sure what you mean by using a "tutor" on the last row.

Re: My 1st container garden 2014
I guess it depends how high your tomatoes grow. You'll probably put a six foot stake at least a foot into the ground, leaving five feet above. That's not super-high for an indeterminate, but many of them get no higher, especially if conditions are not exceptionally good.
You might want to consider something taller and permanent, like cattle panel fencing or EMT metal tubing. Plenty of people here have done it and posted pictures, and both look rock-solid, are very long-lasting, are neater, and are easier to work with than cages and stakes. It's the way I want to go eventually. You'll be able to find references and pics on that pretty quickly in the do-it-yourself sections here or with the search engine.
