O.K. here is what I have so far. cow manure called Black Cow, chicken manure called Black Hen, mushroom compost, and and something called BioCom that has peanut hulls. How does this sound so far? Any suggestions on what the fifth should be.

I bought a small scoop of the mushroom and it filled the back of our Ford Ranger. I shoveled the whole thing out myself. This is my project (husband doesn't like to garden) andn I want to do as much as possible all by myself. Man I have a lot of 'shroom compost!

Maybe a good leaf compost...or an organic humus like Nature's Needs (made from composted wood chips and fruit/vegetable waste)?

Mushroom compost is a pretty good "blend" all by itself. You may have all you need right there.

I would echo Pattipan. I would avoid going top heavy on mushroom compost (substrate) but it is quite satisfactory as one of the desired 5 composts. Where do you live, maybe we can give you some help finding local resources for compost.

Your extra mushroom compost will be ok sitting & waiting for the next project! Very Happy

I am sure there are dairies and horse farms around, yes? You may be able to hit up one of those for some old stable manure. The search engine Gods are not with me tonight... Shocked I am having little luck. Sorry What a Face

Ahhhh, Dollywood. Now, Pigeon Forge and Gatlinburg were fun. Good times.

My flippant answer to your question would be...anything that isn't one of the four you have. I don't think there is something more preferrable (other than "free") when we are talking a grand total of 20% of your compost. Your nutrients are likely there. You are only "dud protecting" at this point....making sure if you have a dud mix, you still have plenty of riches to go around.

Great job!! So excited for you doing it per the system. Up to four kinds of compost. 53366

Thanks everyone. I am going to try a few more days to run down one more type of compost. Then I'm going for it 5 types or not!
