Hi Everyone! Yes, I'm another one! I'm just north of Dallas, in Frisco. I'm totally new to gardening but this I think I can do! I'm already running into problems because my yard has a serious slope to it. I'm thinking of building the gardens up with cinder block and making it as level as I can. All suggestions are welcome!! I am so excited to get started learning and GROWING!

Hi there, LWilliams, welcome to SFG and to the forum! glad you\'re here

You can do it! Search a bit here in the forum; we have had others successfully put in beds on a slope. Just remember soil is heavy and whatever you do needs to be shored up against possible downhill erosion.

Happy gardening! flower

The Texans are coming, The Texans are coming! Empty Neighbors

Post  ashort 2/27/2011, 8:32 pm

I am starting this year as well with a SFG here in Frisco. My first bed is a 2x12 that has 10" elevation change across the 2' section. I just made a box that was level by having it deep in the front and shallower in the back. Top is 2X10's all the way arround and bottom is 2x10 on three sides and 2x4 on the back

by the way, don't fill up the whole box with Mel's mix like I did.... I found out later that I should have used composted rice hulls as a filler to fill and only use MM for the top 6 inches or so... I will end up digging some the MM out and back filling at some point in time...

I now have brocolli, cauliflower, carrots, radishes, spinach, mesculm, red onions, yellow onions, and romaine and butter crunch lettuces planted...

Going to have a start a second box soon...

My brocolli, cauliflower, buttercrunch and romaine lettuces and onions are from Lowe's. I am planning to plant tomatoes and peppers in this box as soon as I harvest this crop, so I was looking to shorten the cycle a bit by using transplants. My 4 squares of onions will stay through June - July, but other than that, I should have 20 squares open again by early april.

If you need vermiculite - Pardner's right south of Main street on Alpha (about a block west of Preston) has the 4cu ft bags - about $25 apiece. Don't count on me to be an expert, as I am still just learning myself....
