I am so thankful to be one of those people who can find such joy and happiness in something so natural, pure and wholesome as watching vegetables grow! Middlemamma's 2nd try: 2011 Garden - Page 5 410210 And that I found this great forum where I can "talk" with others who feel the same way!

middlemamma, I am really interested in seeing how your hops perform. I am looking for something to make a summer barrier between me and my neighbours so as to give me back some of my lost privacy. Something that does not take over like bamboo.

It doesn't matter about the winter, just the summer and early fall when I am out pottering in the garden.

Kelejan, I am sure I will be reporting on them. If these 4 plants grow like people say they do I may be sending home made brew to everyone on the forum! Everyone that heard I planted 4 looked at me like I was insane. If I get the hops off of them everyone thinks I will then I will have enough hops to start a brewery. ROFL! Middlemamma's 2nd try: 2011 Garden - Page 5 Empty Update

Post  middlemamma 7/3/2011, 4:50 pm

My last update was June 2nd! It is amazing how things are growing. If you look at the below pictures and then go back a page to my June 2nd update it's incredible. The corn hadn't even sprouted in the last update!

East End of the garden. Peas are on the right, potatoes in the buckets in front.

Cuke, peppers and Bean box...Trellis goes in soon. In the tires behind are pumpkins, and in the two buckets are fennel and dill....not growing yet.

MM, I am constantly reminded what a "newbie" I am when I see such great gardens posted by others. But I love it! It gives me something to aspire to. Some of you just have such creative, imaginative and amazing ideas for your gardens, I'm very envious. Your garden is looking great and I look forward to seeing more of your updates! Very Happy

Looks like those hops are about 5 - 6 feet tall. Just you wait. They will take over the world. Mine did and I started them with 4 - 6 inch root cuttings.

btw, did anyone tell you that they will come back every year and you will never, ever, ever get all the roots out of the ground? You will need to open a brewery.

Good stuff, Jennie. But, two things grabbed my attention more than the garden. 1- Your skies are beautiful up there. Such a view! 2- I spy a horseshoe court in photo #2! We are playing washers this weekend because it rained today, and I have yet to build my pit for horseshoes.

Don't be....I haven't thought of one original idea for my garden...everything you see is copied from somewhere I saw it...and my garden is NOTHING compared to so many on here. Josh and his family are creative! They have a magnificent garden...maybe someday mine will be 1/2 as good as theirs!

Furbalsmom wrote:btw, did anyone tell you that they will come back every year and you will never, ever, ever get all the roots out of the ground? You will need to open a brewery.

Yes I know they will come back every year, we are excited about that! Smile We don't plan on trying to get rid of them...Joe is really into making his own beer, so they will get good use. His Dad and Uncle also brew their own, so we will have plenty to share.

Thanks Camp! Coming from YOU that is a HUGE compliment! You have a lovely garden!

Our sky is magnificent, being here in the panhandle I think we get some of Montana's famous Big Sky seeping over the border. Smile

Yes Joe loves his horse shoe pits! We have never played washers...our yard is like a park in the summer, we never wanna leave home. No place is as nice as home. We have a 20 ft pool (above ground) the kids can swim in, horse shoes, ladder/bolo ball, and this other game thing I don't know what it is called but the kids and adults play it all the time. It has these little curvy plastic "mitts" on handles and you throw this plastic ball back and forth using the curvy mitt thing. Anyway everyone has a blast with that. We have about 3 pairs of them so a lot of people can play at once. Then we have 2 fire pits and a BBQ to feed everyone on. Party is always at our house. LOL

What a lovely little farm you have there. I was wondering about the pumpkins I have heard that some people fear chemicals leaching from tires into the soil, do you line them with something?

Shannon, I dont eat the pumpkins they are for carving at Halloween time. I don't plant anything in the tires we would eat.

Thanks because I was thinking tire planting was such a good idea for squash I might plant some butternuts that way, but I will follow your example and not plant edibles that way. Darn.

If I were going to plant edibles in there I would for sure line it with plastic. Tires are great free resource.

I may use them to bribe the bees. This is the first year I have planted flowers and even if the honey bees are still absent the beautiful Halicidae bees Middlemamma's 2nd try: 2011 Garden - Page 5 Metallic_green_bee_oregon more than make up for them and since they a small and don't buzz so much they don't scare me. Yes I still have a fear of bees Embarassed but it is much milder than it once was.

Now there's a good suggestion for a Friday Rookie Topic - kohlrabi!!! I have always been intrigued by it and actually bought some seed that I hope to try for a fall garden. This would be a good time for a rundown on this strange looking veggie! As well as some recipes!

Looks great, MM!!!
