Post  georgiahomegarden 1/19/2012, 6:10 pm

I am new to this particular SFG forum. I am starting my third year of SFG in 2012 and I wanted to say hi and start off my first post with a slideshow from my 2011 garden.

I can't post the link for seven days since I am new member, but I will post it after my seven days is up.
I hope everyone has a great 2012 gardening season! 2011 Garden Slideshow 53366

NOTE: This thread has been moved to the Non-SFG Gardening forum.

Welcome to the Square Foot gardening forum. Nice video shots accompanied by the dreamy musical performance of the great IZ. Thanks for sharing. Btw your mix looks different from mine. Yours is lighter and I wonder why. And I think I saw round shaped eggplant, you recall what variety it was?

Greetings GAhomegarden !!!

2011 Garden Slideshow 396615 to the forum. Looks like a great set-up. We have lots of friendly folk here from all over the place that will chime in and help you out should you need it. Clearly, you are resourceful and are no stranger to hard work. Its basically all done now, now hopefully you can just sit back and watch it grow.

Check out our region (i'm assuming you are middle south but no worries if not) when you can. It will help with some local planting dates and things specific to where we live.

https://squarefoot.forumotion.com/f9-middle-south

Pls become a regular here not only on our region but on the general forum itself.

Would love some updates too Very Happy

Thanks for the kudos.

It is a poor man's Mel's Mix. My mix was one half dirt from last year's bed, one half quality dirt/compost from a local nursery, vermiculite, lime, and 13-13-13 fertilizer. I wasn't super scientific about it. I couldn't afford to use that amount of vermiculite that he suggests. I also amend my soil with bags of Black Gold Cow Fertilizer and mushroom compost each time I plant something new in the bed.

See my reply above, my mix isn't exactly the same as Mel's Mix. It worked pretty well for me though. That variety of eggplant was called Black Beauty. I bought two seedlings from Lowe's last year. One plant died and the other one produced over 20 eggplants. It was unreal. I hit them with a sprinkling a triple phospate fertilizer right after they flowered. This was a recommendation at my local nursery for my pepper plants and I decided to try it on my eggplant too. I don't know if that was the cause for the super production of that one plant or if I was just lucky.

Thanks for the affirmation. I tried adding my blog address to my signature, but it tells me the same thing. I must wait 7 days before posting external addresses. I will be sure to do that after my 7 days "grace" period.

Thanks for that information, I appreciate it. I am beginning to like this forum much better than the GardenWeb forums. These are more up to date and easier to use. I will be sure to send updates from time to time once things pick up. Thanks again.

To be a true Square Foot Garden, it must contain Mel's Mix which is 1/3 Peat Moss, 1/3 Coarse Vermiculite, and 1/3 blend of at least 5 different types of compost, a box, and a grid. Anything else belongs in Non Square Foot Gardening.

Not to put too fine a point on it, but the poor man's MM is straight compost. It might have been a better choice - any dirt or real soil tends to make the mix really not as workable as either straight compost or regular MM. I would have taken the money spent on fertilizer and lime and bought peat - a compressed 2 cf bag really equals double that when fluffed - and then added vermiculite and compost. Compost is the one ingredient that is easily scrounged. And it sounds like you have a starter anyway. Just saying.

Wow, you guys really take SFG serious. To move a thread because I don't use the exact proportions of Mel's Mix is a little extreme to say the least. I always thought SFG was any form of gardening that uses raised beds, that were then equally divided into quadrants. Thus maximizing space and making maintenance easier.

LM Easy there, be assured you are welcomed. You have to understand the most important fact. This forum supports the method that is taught in the book. This forum exists because of the author's decades of fine tuning His method that works. This forum's volunteers support people every day who want to discuss the method. See where this is going? If you don't use the book's method then you're really not on the same page with most of the people here. But also understand this is not a problem. Your post was moved because it is the correct thing to do. Your growing methods are different, your issues and perhaps problems will be different, therefore it belongs in the correct thread. P.s. I grew black beauty eggplants too, mine were elongated compared to your round black beauties, I would have thought they'd be the same shape, wouldn't you? LM

Keep going...
On page 87 of the ANSFG book, Mel wrote:
Mel's Mix is the most important, productive, essential, necessary, critical, major subject and is the backbone of the entire book and the Square Foot Gardening method!

That's the picture. Get it? It's the reason all the other improvements are possible...
That is the beginning of Chapter 5, titled: "Mel's Mix, Essential for Square Foot Gardening Success"

For some reason, not everyone comprehends Mel's words as he intended. The one thing we've been asked to do here on Mel's forum, is to make sure everyone knows that it's not SFG without Mel's Mix.

We're always on the lookout for the magic words that everyone will understand. Please, tell us how we can improve on Mel's words, so that everyone who arrives here understands what Mel's message is.
