I was thinking about that too. I thought about asking if there could be one of those map things where it's marked where people are. See who is kinda close to you visually ya know?

OK, I'm about to vote. Just wanted to say our Zone here in Dallas has been considered to be 7b in the past. It was changed last year to 8a. Does this matter? Probably not! Good years, bad years, whatever! It does make it a little difficult to plan, though. My own observation last year was we were Zone 7b in Spring and 8a in Fall, so I guess I'm not the only gardener here in DFW confused :drunken:

Aren't all the extra's fun. I believe I'm a 6b, however, am on the line to be a 7. Either way, I'll still end up planting things that probably won't work, but it will be fun to try.

I'm in Zone 4b, but only 10 miles from here my friends are in zone 3. I am fairly new to gardening in this area (moved from Zone 8b) and my friends who are long-time gardeners here say to plant for Zone 3 here if you really want it to survive!

We are sort of on the edge between a 3 and a 4, so I guess that is why they say at the garden centers that we are a 3b. However, there are little microclimates within each zone so depending on the location of your garden you may be closer to a 4 or a 3. This was really noticeable to me at one place that we lived. Plants in the front yard where it was very open would freeze much sooner the identical plants in the back yard. Just the way the house and the tall trees and the garage were all situated gave me a wonderful protected back yard that made a huge difference.

Every gardener likes to push their zone a bit. So just be prepared to give a bit of extra protection in spring and fall to extend your season and if you have tender perennials, give them some extra winter protection. It is always fun to see what you can get away with although a bit sad when some of your favourites get hit by a sudden unexpected late spring snowfall or frost.

THANK YOU!!!! I'm at the top part of that zone line and I thought somewhere I had read we were 7b, in fact I found 2 maps on the same day and each one said something different. I feel so much better, I thought I was losing it.

I don't pay much attention to the a, b, or the number I just look to see if a plant can tolerate 100 degree weather and tons of sun, if it can I stick it in the ground, if not, it gets the same treatment that "dry clean only" clothes get-back on the shelf/rack.....

Well, I put mine in as 7, which is what is quoted everywhere. But to be honest I think it doesn't mean a great deal here Laughing

Zone 6b/7a. Some maps put us even in 6a, but that's definitely not us... Maps can be confusing sometimes, especially when they change.

I love the 4 distinct seasons we get here, mixed in with a long summer.

The zip code chart says 7B but the county extension agent say 8A because of all the water around, Albemarle Sound 4 miles E, Pasquatank River 2 mi N, and Little River 3 mi S. of my house

Hi buttaflie143! I believe Raleigh would be in zone 7. The only part of NC which is in zone 8 (I believe) in along the coast. I hope this helps.

p.s. It's cool that your mother-in-law lives here! We're about 10 miles east of Frederick.
