Zones? Empty Zones?

Post  CNida89 2/8/2016, 12:04 pm

Sorry to bother everyone with what is probably a silly question, but I notice in people's posts and profiles that under location it lists a certain zone number. What is this number, and how do I know what mine is?

Your local Cooperative extension can help. There are also several sites on the internet to look up Zones. Here is one site - http://planthardiness.ars.usda.gov/PHZMWeb/Default.aspx

The number itself tells you pretty much when you'll be seeding, planting, & harvesting. The lower the number, the lower of actual growing days you have.

Ah, thanks for the answers, and thanks for the link. I updated my zone accordingly.

I am in zone 6b, but only just barely.

Lol! Sounds like me... I'm pretty much on the border myself. And the microclimates shift pretty radically in my area.

An interesting bit of information concerning the difference between USDA Hardiness Zones and the Agriculture Canada zones:

From http://www.almanac.com/content/plant-hardiness-zones

"Unlike the USDA map, which is based only on minimum winter temperatures, the Agriculture Canada map considers a wider range of climatic variables, including maximum temperatures and the length of the frost-free period."

BTW here in Ottawa the Canada zone is 5b which corresponds to USA zone 4b at least as far as minimum winter temperatures are concerned.
