You can do a grid with half squares.... just call the 8" a half square and you're good! My grid really was a big help. It made me think about plant size and what could fit where.... plus, it really made the bare spots jump out and let me know they could be planted again.

Busy Day! It is supposed to get down to 30 tonight and maybe 27 tomorrow! Its cold here. This afternoon I was setting up christmas lights in my garden and rushing around harvesting stuff when it actually began to snow! Well for Glendale/Phoenix Az, it was snow, more like soft bits of ice. It only lasted awhile, but it was crazy!

Here is the 8x4. Peppers were still green and not red so I left them on. I also picked most of the bigger peas and a bunch of jalapenos

The back bed. I harvested most of the lettuces and chard

Everything I harvested today

Now everything is all tucked away under sheets and plastic with christmas lights. I hope they survive! I have a bunch of tomatoes that I've been waiting on forever. If they don't, I'll live I was kinda tempting fate by leaving that many in trying to over winter them!

How'd it go last night?! We've had a very mild winter so far, with the lowest low only being 35 (and that was only one night, other than that we haven't gotten below 40). I'm holding my breath that I can get my tomatoes and peppers through January. Last year at this time we were much colder and got down to 28 one night.
Anyway, anxious to hear how your plants do as it sounds like you are doing very much the same thing I plan to when (if?) there is a freeze in the forecast.

Got down to the low 20s last night. the 8x4 bed with lights a sheet and plastic came through fine.
The back bed had some plastic come up (windy) and 6-8 plants are badly frost damaged. I think they will make it, but the toms on them might not. we will see. We have one more night of low 30's to get through. In this cold spell at least.

Finally had time to go out and really check out the frost/cold damage. 8x4 box looks great. Some of the pea plants touched the plastic and are looking a little whilted, but will be fine I'm sure. Was very happy that my bell peppers still look great as do the yellow pear toms.

Back wall bed. All lettuce, spinach, onions, and chard look great. My 6 Lemon boys all got severly damaged, but look like they still have some unaffected branches near the bottom. I will leave them and see what happens. 2 sweet 100's also damaged on top, but not as badly. My heirlooms we the least damaged. They were also on the far side from where the plastic came up. The black russian prince has some top damage (it was also the tallest plant) The beefsteak has very little damage.

That's very encouraging! It would be EXTREMELY rare for us to get any lower than high 20s, so I'm hopeful I'll make it through the winter.

Happy to hear you were able to protect most things.

planted my fall/winter garden finally! - Page 2 Empty 2 weeks after freeze

Well, its been 2 weeks since the crazy cold weather here in Az. The garden is bouncing back.

This is the 8x4 box that didn't get any damage this go around. Some of the tomatoes did get damaged around thanksgiving, but you can hardly tell now!

planted my fall/winter garden finally! - Page 2 Jn_13_10

Plastic came up on one side of the bed and the lemon boys all got damaged. Most lost a couple of tomatoes, but there are still lots on there. They are even starting to turn yellow now.

Black Russian Prince Tom took a hit, but the tomatoes are still okay. I can't wait to taste my first heirloom tom!

Things are looking good in the near future. 70's in the days and 40's at night. My garden should recover quickly.
