skinny turnips & radishes

Hi -- I'm a first-time gardener here. Why are most of my radishes and all of my turnips so skinny? They seem to have good foliage. Some of them had some little eggs under the leaves. We used Mel's Mix as in the book. We've had a ton of rain this summer here in Madison, WI. People who garden say everything is 2 weeks ahead of schedule.

Howdy Rusky and welcome to the SFG forum.

From what I have experienced in the past skinny turnips and radishes can be caused by to much heat or days that are to long. As the year progresses the plants will put more of their energy into producing seed instead of developing a bulb type root. Radishes and greens are generally planted in the early spring and late summer when the days are shorter and cooler. When did you plant?

Turnips and some radishes can be planted now for a fall crop. Most in the greens family will develop better flavor after the first frost as long as it is not a real "killer" frost.

For this, I am coming out of lurking and finally making my first post. Very Happy

I, too, am in Madison and experiencing the same thing you are. My first batch of radishes were pretty nice. They could have been larger, but I was happy with them.

Everything since is just red roots! My last three batches had no size at all. Nice foliage, though. I've decided not to plant any more radishes this year. We have had so much rain here and it's been quite hot lately (you know it's hot when the cicadas are singing already early in the morning). Great for some things (the cucumbers are just ridiculous) but not our poor radishes. :scratch:
