Are turnips supposed to taste like radishes?
And do they get any more mild if you cook them?
Because I was severely disappointed when I pulled one, washed, and bit.... Radish all the way, so what's the point?

That wasn't a turnip then!
Unless you were eating the greens? Those can be radishy, and yes those will mellow with cooking. Cooking the turnip itself also mellows any flavors, though I can't think that there should be any...
Was it spicy, or was it maybe bitter? There is a chemical in turnips and rutabegas that you can be sensitive to (genetically) that could make those veggies intolerably bitter.

I think my sunflower plant can take me in a fair fight...it's taller than me, and it keeps giving me dirty looks.

It was a white bottom and purple top and it was THAT part that tasted just like a red round radish. Hugely disappointing because I don't LIKE red round radishes.

Re: Are turnips supposed to taste like radishes?
I find they taste very similar, but the radish is much more peppery. I prefer rutabegas to turnips and grow seventop variety turnips for only the greens. The greens are naturally bitter and an acquired taste, but I grew up eating them and mustard greens, also bitter. Because of the bitterness, I like to cook them with cure pork.
