Off topic : Xeriscape plants

Ok, I just got a notice from my Neighborhood Association to landscape my front yard.
I do not want to spend a whole lot of time maintaining a lawn and prefer to be SFG in the back yard. I have a 2x5 in the front yard but it's not enough greenery for the rules. I also don't like the idea of possibly having my veggies walking away on their own.

Do you have any suggestions to make lawn care easier? It is enough work just keeping up with the weeds that grow year round. Off topic : Xeriscape plants Kopfschuettel

I'm looking at xeriscaping, too, although the climate here in Colorado is far different than yours in Hawaii. One suggestion would be to get advice from University of Hawaii Botany Department. If you select plants that are native (rather than non-native bluegrasses) you will be taking advantage of the normal weather patterns for your landscape's water needs. The botany department can also advise you on which plants need less care in the way of pruning, etc.

What's the size of your plot that needs to be landscaped?

Have you visited the Xeriscape garden in Halawa? They can give you ideas on various plants. They'll have their annual plant sale on 8/7. Check out the Board of Water Supply website for more info.

Easiest way to have low maintenance landscaping is to use heavy duty weedblock cloth, cut out an X where you want to plant and laydown a thick layer of mulch.

It's been one of those nagging jobs I have been putting off doing.
