Thanks guys. So when I harvest them I then have to cure them by letting them dry in a cool place for a while?

I managed to find shallot starters in a great privately-run garden center near me. It's also where I got my compost (no, I couldn't find five kinds, only three Smile )!

Do a Google search on how to grow shallots and you will get info about curing requirements. Very Happy

Glad you found some! See my post on April 24 at 1:10pm for how I cured my shallots. It took about 4 weeks to cure them. I still have quite a few left, which should last me until this year's are ready! Here's a pic of them today. I just planted 4 squares, 4 shallots per. We'll see how they compare with last year's harvest.

I've planted some shallots this year, too, because they're so expensive at the grocery store, and I have a few recipes I like to use them in. I found sets at Rural King-- I don't know if that's only a midwest store or not, but it's basically a farm supply store.

I didn't know how to plant them, though, so I planted them 9 per square like onions. Embarassed Hopefully they go okay. I planted a about 6 squares, I think, just so I could use up the bag. I think all of them have popped up. I'm glad to know that they are harvested so early, though. That way I'll have some more free squares for beans or fall lettuce.
