I am in Eastern NC. I moved here a few years ago from PA and take advantage of the weather! I can usually plant cold crops as early as March (peas, cabbage, spinach, lettuce, etc.) and then everything else by mid to end of April. On occassion we will get cold snaps but watching the weather and covering the beds with plastic if low temps are expected overnight protects the plants! I can usually keep my garden going until November. It is Fab-u-lous!!!

First harvest of 2010 - Zuchinni & Squash Empty Re: First harvest of 2010 - Zuchinni & Squash

Post  bullfrogbabe 7/4/2010, 7:11 pm

The yellow summer squash seems to be a variety of yellow crookneck. I have some of this growing and it is a bush-like plant. There doesn't seem to be very many vining types of summer squash.

There is a great discussion about varieties of squash bush/vine and winter/summer types at the following discussion thread:

https://squarefoot.forumotion.com/general-sfg-talk-f5/squash-vine-or-bush-t341.htm

My summer and winter squashes have just started flowering here in Petawawa, Ontario so I have a while to wait before any harvests of squash here.

you mention that you froze the croookneck squash, did you cook it first? I've been dehydrating them. Would you believe I found an excalibur dehydrator in my basement this year in an unopened box, I believe my mom bought it for me when i first started studying to be an herbalist and I must have forgotten about it. There was a gift receipt in it dated 1996 can you believe it. anyway, I've been very thinly slicing the zucchini and crookneck squash with a mandoline and dehydrating it and it is really yummy as "chips"

Bonnie, brilliant idea of the dehydration. My yellow summer & Zucchini squash are nearing harvest size and I have plenty of bloom coming on. I need to find my dehydrator.
Mani, I would also like to hear about the freezing process.

I just cut them into 1/2" slices, rinse, and freeze! They come out great when you add to stir fry, sautee, etc. You can freeze one this way for a few days and cook it before you try a big batch to be sure you like it.

I planted Burpee Calabacin Pic-N-Pic Hybrid - at least that is what is left on the top of the label! Smile

My compost has lots of bunny manure and I lightly broadcast some 10-10-10 every 30 days. My garden only gets full sun from dawn until about 2p.m. then it is shaded from the heat of the day, I think this helps too! I had it in full sun the last two years and it was not nearly as lush and productive as it has been this year.

I love the chard.... am surprised it has lasted so long.

As for cooking the squash... This variety can be used as both a summer and winter squash. The skin is still tender so I think it's still in "summer squash" phase. (I was tempted to leave it on the vine longer to see just how big it would get, but I've been dying to try one of these!) I thought to just pan-sear it quickly with some olive oil, garlic and some herbs the first time around. Unless you have a better idea? Smile

That zucchino is crazy! Hope it's good. I have swiss chard that came up in a totally neglected area where I had a veggie garden last. It is possibly the healthiest and most prolific thing I have and I have done exactly NOTHING for it. Swiss chard is a tough broad. Go figure.

It rained here but I would have missed it had I not been standing outside. I would not swear that it hit the ground.

Ander has brought up something interesting... as early as yesterday, that squash was looking like a summer squash. I think it changed color overnight! We had a lot of rain yesterday, but here it is from 2 days ago (July 9), on the vine....
