Hi from Southeastern PA...
Just saying hello to all ...
We moved into a new rental place in April, and planted our first garden ever. The yard was in total neglect when we moved in, and I wasn't sure of the soil type, so we built (5) 4x4 raised beds to start (my inspiration was this site, actually).
I'm sure I've done some things wrong, and not everything has grown, but overall the bulk of what we planted seems to be thriving. It's a learning experience in any event, and I found that I really enjoy it! My wife laughs when I come home after work every day and "check my babies" as she calls it.
One thing I've definitely learned is not to start seeds in trays. Everything we transplanted from the seed trays died within a week. The same seeds started in the ground (after their siblings died) were 3x bigger and healthier.

You probably know this already, but we love to see pictures of gardens and food!
Happy gardening
Re: Hi from Southeastern PA...
Thanks, Boffer! I just pulled all the sod up from the squares where the boxes are and tilled the ground underneath and added more topsoil and compost to fill the boxes about 3/4. So far we've harvested some early strawberries, a few zucchini and some green beans, but the bulk of what we planted seems to be just around the corner. Three different kinds of tomatoes, two different kinds of peppers, red, white and yellow onions, shallots, garlic, yellow squash, cucumbers, spinach and something my wife found called asparagus beans. I've even got a few pumpkin plants growing in a pile of leftover composting sod that I pulled up from where the beds are located. The zucchinis, cucumbers and strawberries in particular really seem to be growing like crazy! As soon as i can figure out how to upload pictures, I'll be glad to show you! I didn't really stick to the SFG layout, though. I kind've tried to go along with what the seed packets indicated for spacing.
