Hello from Morris County NJ
Hello all.
I'm still reading The All New Square Foot Gardening, but I'm hooked on the concept and eager to get started. I've done some gardening as a kid, ornamental stuff. I discovered SFG by way of my newfound interest in Community Supported Agriculture and Michael Pollan's "In Defense of Food." I realized that I could never convince my wife that we should invest in our health by subscribing to a CSA at triple our total grocery bill. But I'm sure she'll be willing to grow some veggies out back, especially if it's easy-peasy.
I have a small yard and will probably build 2-foot wide frames to snug up to the side of the house. I think I go about 20 long. That's not as much as Mel's calculations would suggest for my family of four, but it's greater than zero. Plus, there's a good chance that I'll have to sell the idea to my wife as more of a fun family project/hobby rather than a serious grocery supplement. (She came from a farm as a girl and never ever wants to go back. Probably because they were growing "the hard way"!)
I'm thinking of starting small with tomatoes, carrots, spinach, lettuce, and some herbs. Baby steps...
Well, wish me luck!

Welcome Dave:
If there is a way to get your wife back into gardening this is it. Square Foot Gardening is the easiest way ever invented to garden. Weeding = the bane of row gardening. Bending over, pulling, hoeing, the cost of fertilizer (year after year) the cost of a tiller, the never ending cost of amending the soil and oh my poor back!. Yes I can see where so many people give up gardening (I did). Now comes the joy in growing your own without all the fuss and muss. SFG is the way.
God Bless, Ward.

Welcome to the forum. You've got enough on your plate for this year. But, when you start looking for room for more boxes next fall, think about going up. Tabletop SFG that is. I'm just planting a seed here!
I'm sure your family will enjoy SFG
