Hawaii SFG Association
Aloha,
A couple of people have asked for more information regarding the newly formed Hawaii SFG Association mentioned in a couple of other posts. Rather than respond directly, I thought it would best to create a new topic, and then invite the officers to logon and provide some details regarding the association's purpose, membership, etc.

This is great!
I have a few questions; how do we join; when do you meet; are there dues; how can I help?

Still waiting! OahuSFG, Hawaii's regional host, hasn't been around in over a month. I was beginning to wonder if Hawaii fell off the map! Do you folks do a 'fall' planting, or do you just keep re-planting as usual when squares become available?paipiwa wrote:I can see that no one has replied to this...
Re: Hawaii SFG Association
We keep planting and planting whatever can grow.
I've been super busy with repairing my 4 boxes that got infested with termites! Emptying it out and repairing the height (adding 2" to my 1x6 wood) and raising it up off the ground, adding termite trays to the bottom. LOTS of WORK! That and trying to Xeriscape my front lawn for the Neighborhood Association "Police". Plus I work full time and am a single mom.
However, I did have a really good surprise! I puchased Asparagus in February, but did not plant them till the end of JULY! They are doing very well in 2 of my repaired open bottom boxes! I decided to put it in the front yard to kill two birds with one stone.
Also growing are Heirloom Lima beans, yard long beans and Green Mingionette Lettuce (Manoa Lettuce), in my TT 2x4. I also have Basil, Green onions, Gandule beans, Pineapples growing in small 1x1 boxes.

It's magic-I just mention your name, and here you are!
I wonder what has become of punaluuSFG, and how her son's scout project went.
How nice that must be. But I guess it's a trade off for dealing with termitesWe keep planting and planting whatever can grow.

Is there a SFG association on Oahu?
Hello,
I'm confused after reading the forum whether there is an organization or not. I just purchase all the supplies and put together a sfg, but would be happy to learn from experienced Oahu sfg gardeners.

You posted to a thread that hasn't been active for more than a year. Hawaii SFGers have been scarce on the forum this year. You might look around the website for the teachers' list to see if there are any in Hawaii.
With your unique climate, it would be advantageous and fun to share knowledge and experience with other local SFGers. Happy gardening.

Aloha, y'all! Here's another Oahu gardener; I plan to get started with SFG this fall. We'll have to keep in touch on the forums.

Still sfg-ing here.
Hi! I'm still gardening here on Oahu. I really wish there was an association here that could meet maybe once a month for starters, share tips on our unique climate, and problems.
Even if we just met once a year without an association but simply as SF Gardeners! I'd be glad to attend that too. I'd even be happy to help organize it at a public library.

I'm also disappointed to see that we in Hawaii are not keeping up with this forum. I think we have so much to share. Being on Kauai I would not be able to meet physically, but like boffer, I wonder where everyone is. We are so fortunate to have growing weather all year long, and yes, we have our unique challenges but that is the value of keeping in touch.
I have been a member of SFG forum for a very short time and already have acquired great information, like baby powder for ants? Gonna try that.

Planting in Hawaii
Susan and I just planted a whole lot of cole starts in between the onion rows. Cabbage, Kale, Cauliflower.
We had planted 2013 Provider beans and they didn't emerge. Then I read somewhere that onions don't like beans but do like cole crops and Ed had a whole lot of 4" pots ready to go.
We have a good team. Susan is the strong one (69 years old) and Ed(62) has to be careful about his hands so does all our starts and I (79) wander about scoping out what needs to be done next. And from time to time I do a little actual work.
I'm mad as hell at my granddaughter who decided the Emerite beans should produce seeds instead of bounty for our table. Argggghhh. Cut off the production dramatically. I have read somewhere to let two vines produce seed and she will do that from now on you betcha!! But she still thinks she is right. "There are more blossoms" she says.

duplicating my replay to other folks
trying to stir up a little Hawaiian here.
Susan and I are creating two new sfg beds. She does the heavy work.
We have just planted lots of cauliflower, broccoli and kale next to the onions. We have to be diligent with water as we are not having much rain down here in the lowlands, although lots in Koke`e (our hills at about 3500')..
Picking a bit of that wonderful asparagus and a fair amount of lettuce for dinners. Our starts are doing well and we are looking for friends and neighbors to share them with.

Regarding Termites
I just thought I'd toss this idea your way if termites are problems.
Newer termite bait stations have been developed. They are inserted in the ground and left there, only to be inspected occasionally.
Termites need to die a natural death and this product does just that, they love to eat it. Carry it back to the colony and tell them all about the goodies.
They all follow suit and eat from the stations....This material does not kill termites. It keeps them from shedding and that keeps them from growing.
Then they die a natural death.. the entire colony..
IT has worked ( and still is ) for me. In my home which was treated many times until this came along.
Search it on google if interested..

another fine idea from sfg
mahalos Jimmy Cee. I will share this with my friends. We don't have termites in our beds yet but I wonder if we could stick them around the houses?

The company I am using has a yearly service fee after an initial installation.kauairosina wrote:mahalos Jimmy Cee. I will share this with my friends. We don't have termites in our beds yet but I wonder if we could stick them around the houses?
They installed round chambers about 6 inches in diameter every so many feet.
I'm sure instructions are included in the self installation kits.
Yes I have them for our home protection and they have worked

Re: Hawaii SFG Association
In the last two days I have watch documentaries on Hawaii and found them very interesting. The first one was mainly about the sea around the islands but the second one was more interesting to me as it showed how the islands were formed and eventually will die.
Saw a bit about the trees growing and insects, birds and animals coming to the islands but nothing about humans or gardening.
It was when I saw a map of the Pacific Ocean and the Islands so many miles away from everywhere else that I realized how fragile life could be on remote islands.
All the islands are so different from each other. So beautiful.
kauairosina had mentioned how 95% of the food was imported. That is what would worry me.

We are a small dot in the middle of a huge bunch of water. The history of these islands is fascinating. If you ever decide to visit do let me know.

sfg convention in Hawaii
Well it would have to be on Kauai for me I no longer go traipsing off to other islands unless for medical reasons and then with a buddy. I wonder how many folks we could rustle up? I sure also wonder how I could just alert others from the islands that we are alive and well on this forum.
You can't beat our weather, that's for sure although it's like stocks "previous success doesn't insure future success.' Our big problem here is traffic through a main corridor. But we could figure how to avoid that to a degree.
Nothing like thinking out of the box Jimmy.

you are so right Kelejan
but I'm not holding my breathe . We have the same kind of corruption and money donations here as every where else. Too bad. But we will keep on keeping on. One of these days we will get glyphosate testing in our foods. Hopefully before my demise.

I would help set this up, even if it's just a simple get-together or meeting of certified instructors and SFG-ers.
