I have decided to start a vegetable garden here in sunny (very) Tempe, AZ. I have heard about square foot gardening and ordered a Garden In Minutes Garden grid to help with watering. I will have a 4' X 8' 14" raised garden that will get late afternoon (hottest) shade. I'm a little confused about Mel's Mix, so I will read the posts there to see if I can find my answers. Looking forward to having some things grow!

Re: New to the Forum
Welcome to the forum from Ohio! There is a wealth of information here on the forum, and there is a great group of gardeners ready to provide answers or suggestions to any questions you may have. If you haven't already done so, get a copy of the All New Square Foot Gardening, 3rd Edition, book. It is an easy read with easy to follow instructions.
Never plant without a bucket of compost at your side.

Welcome, LKTODD! I think you will love the SFG method, especially in your climate. I highly recommend getting your hands on Mel Bartholomew’s All New Square Foot Gardening though. Many times (as I did) you can get it from your library to check out first!
I am sure you will find lots of info on this site. I’d love to hear more about your experiences if you have ever gardened? And we do love pictures….I am not so great at them…but yeah!
Looking forward to hearing more—there is also regional hosts to explore, and post too.

Re: New to the Forum
Hi LK, Welcome to the Forum from hot Fresno, CA!
Reading the 2nd or 3rd Edition of ALL NEW Square Foot Gardening is invaluable. After you read it (quick reading with photos) you will know what questions for clarification you may want to ask.
For existing beds, 6-7" of new Mel's Mix plus a grid on top of a bottom fill of top soil works.
