Not sure if I am doing this correctly, but here it goes. I am not new to gardening, but I am new to this kind of garden. I bought the book, built and filled the boxes and planned where I am putting things. I have the indoor (tomato etc) planted and the outdoor ones I have started planting. We live in GA presently and call it home now. We have a lot of children and so far 7 grandchildren. I guess that is about it. Looking forward to learning more.

Hi there.  There a couple of us who also live in Ga.  I am in Brooks about 30 min south of the Atlanta Airport.  Atlanta Marie is somewhere on the north side of Atlanta (somewhere up there).

I do have problems with 🦌! I am in the middle of putting up a fence and netting ASAP. We put the first five posts in tonight before the thunder started. I am down south of Macon. One of my sons works up at Emery and the VA hospital.

Hi Oregonrain. Welcome! (Thanks for the intro Yolos!!)

I actually live in Buford, so up towards the southern end of Lake Lanier.

That IS a beautiful set-up! What all are you growing?

I am doing my research right now for installing deer fencing next month. Please join me in one of the "deer fence" threads, to compare notes and progress.

Welcome from Coastal NC. You have found the best forum on the WWW.
From your photo, it looks like you are all in!!

I know you already have the boxes built and filled, but I am going to make 2 minor suggestions that may be easier to correct now than when the beds are full.
1. the SFG books recommend the boxes be no wider than 4' because it gets hard to reach in much beyond that, especially when the plants are full.
2. you may want to consider a bit more space between the boxes...again, when the plants and leaves are booming, 3' may be tight.

Please keep in mind this is just my opinion and I am wanting to help ensure you have a successful SFG experience.

Welcome to the forum, Oregonrain!  Ohio here, it’s frozen at the moment...but we are deep in planning mode.  I would echo ralitaco’s concerns about the deep-ness of the 6’ boxes.  My favorite box is 3 by whatever...I have a 3x7 for strawberries.  It’s perfect for that.  I love my 4x4, however for annuals.

So glad you found us.  What do you like to eat?  What plants are you going to try?

Introducing myself Empty Re: Introducing myself

Post  Oregonrain 3/1/2020, 10:39 am

Sorry it took so long to respond. My husband split open his head driving poles for the fence (he is fine now, 11 stitches) and then my son’s family got really sick with whatever is going around Atlanta. Our fence is in. Finished as of yesterday.
I understand the concern and would have done it differently if the boxes were not already built before the decision to sq foot garden. A bit late now! I am going to try to put the super tall things in the center. I don’t know if it will work we shall see. If the ridiculousness we call rain would stop it would help. I am not sure what grows well here in Middle Ga with the heat and rain, so I am trying a bit of this and that. It froze again last night, so there is that. I have potatoes, onions, asparagus, garlic, pea and celery in the ground right now. I am not sure if I did the potatoes or garlic correctly as I have not tried them before.
I have started a few things inside, melons, squash, tomatoes, Brussel sprouts, egg plant, cucumbers and dill.

Dang, sorry to hear about your husband.
I hope he tells his friends a better story about how that happened...I know I would. Very Happy

As for the wider beds, nothing wrong with that. You may want to consider zucchini or something larger instead of taller. I say that because if it is taller you will not only have to reach in but up as well. Just a suggestion. I'm sure you will find what works for you.

As for Georgia, you may want to check out Yolos' pages...search "Brooks, GA" in the forum search box and you will find her threads.
