Re: What are you eating from your garden today?
Salads!
My winter lettuce was taken out by ? white flies?.

Re: What are you eating from your garden today?
Oh, it didn't come easily! I've been fighting a constant battle with aphids, using a one-two punch of insecticidal soap followed by diatomaceous earth. As far as I can tell, neem oil doesn't do much.sanderson wrote:Salads! My winter lettuce was taken out by ? white flies?.

Neem oil only affects Aphids if it is sprayed directly on them. If it is sprayed on the plant, the Aphids will eat right through it.

Re: What are you eating from your garden today?
I just added Spinosad to my arsenal. I'm ready for the aphids and spider mites this summer.
Re: What are you eating from your garden today?
OhioGardener wrote:Spinosad, on the other hand, will kill them either way.
Not to be confused with Spinosaurus ...

though I imagine it would do a pretty good job eliminating aphids and everything else.
So, which brand/make spinosad do you recommend?
Looking on-line, I see one source that is selling a "concentrate" for 90$ a gallon. But it only has 0.5% spinosad

Wow....that statement is soooo true, Mark. We’ve all been there many times!markqz wrote:That's how it appeared to me! I'm glad (in a sad sort of wayOhioGardener wrote:

Re: What are you eating from your garden today?
So that's why my Neem Oil doesn't work on aphids. I've got spinosad concentrate on hand now. Bring them on!

Re: What are you eating from your garden today?
Spinosad has a stronger odour, stays in the soil only 24 hours before dissipating, so that's good. I have an essential oil spray (1 tsp organic dish soap, 5 drops each clove, peppermint and rosemary essential oils in a quart/liter of water) that really brings down the aphid population. I still have aphids (this is my indoor garden), but I can actually sprout carrot and beet and bean seeds. For indoors, I prefer using the essential oil spray.

Celeriac
My daughter cooked 1 large and one smaller celeriac root for part of dinner:

It's been an interesting experiment, but I'm not sure it's worth the squares.

I tried celeriac root, I didn't really like it, but everyone has their own tastes.markqz wrote:My daughter cooked 1 large and one smaller celeriac root for part of dinner:

And I most often eat either salad, if there is not a lot of time, or we fry steaks: D

Re: What are you eating from your garden today?
The celeriac, when it's not too fibrous, tastes like mildly celery-flavored potatoes.Scorpio Rising wrote:Does it taste like celery?
The stems taste exactly like celery, but are too fibrous except chopped up and added to stir fry. The stems also have an odd thing that some of them grow a membrane over the celery "trench", so I suppose you could use them as biodegradable soda straws

It turns out that my family really liked them, so I might be growing them again. Later.

Had the first Baby Kale Leaf Salad for dinner. Can't believe how fast those plants are growing, they seem to love this cool, damp weather we have been having. And the young leaves are so tender and sweet tasting.

Parsley, parsley, and more parsley! Plants are starting to bolt and I'm not inclined to compost them.

Harvested the first couple of pounds of purple passion asparagus. Going to roast it this evening. The next batch will be cream of asparagus soup

Found a huge softball-sized turnip that I peeled off the outer "rind", and gave it a taste (not expecting much) and it was good enough to use in a slaw with red peppers and onions, marinated in a vinaigrette dressing. Glad I didn't toss it into the compost.

Still got 20 pounds of onions plaited up in strings from last years harvest. We had two in a pork & mushroom casserole for tea tonight .

I had my first 4 French Breakfast radishes yesterday for supper—very mild as it has been cool/cold here! Looks like lettuce leaves tomorrow—not a bunch but some! Red Romaine. It’s beautiful!
