Forum's address change
I guess I've not been posting or reading much lately, so did not notice that the address for the forum had changed. I've been reading posts that I was watching, getting to the forum from email that was sent to me. I had something to post so tried to get to the forum, and got the message "cannot find the page you're looking for" . I checked back in my emails and note this happened about May 4.

Re: Forum's address change
I saw that and thought maybe the company was doing work and went to a default address. I think you are right.

Re: Forum's address change
Thanks for the reply. I guess I'm the only person that uses the address to get here.

Re: Forum's address change
Yes, it has been changed and it is difficult getting here. One must explicitly write forum in the search, ..I had a few links on my computer and now need to change them all.

Yep, the links have to be changed. I couldn't count the number of times I have used the old address as referrals. Kind of a pain . . .
Re: Forum's address change
Same here ... Over the past few months I have referred people on other groups to come to our forum through the old address. Now they will each a dead end.sanderson wrote:Yep, the links have to be changed. I couldn't count the number of times I have used the old address as referrals. Kind of a pain . . .

Re: Forum's address change
Pale Moon unexpectedly said "Server not found Pale Moon can't find the server at squarefoot.forumotion.com." and of course suspected VTel's DNS server, because I got the same type of error for avengerforumz (IIRC) (.com, IIRC) and changing the DNS server solved the problem. Boy, IIRC, VTel's DNS server can be picky! I don't recall such DNS error when I had Comcast, (briefly, when I temporarily lived in Bellows Falls, Vermont) LOL

Re: Forum's address change
It should be noted that the SFG forum was created on and always hosted on Forumotion, at least as long as I have been associated with it.RJARPCGP wrote:Pale Moon unexpectedly said "Server not found Pale Moon can't find the server at squarefoot.forumotion.com." and of course suspected VTel's DNS server, because I got the same type of error for avengerforumz (IIRC) (.com, IIRC) and changing the DNS server solved the problem. Re: Forum's address change
I have been going to my email account and reading posts and getting on to the Forum that way. Worked until there were not post alerts on my email. I hope I have now bookmarked the right address.
Re: Forum's address change
Well TD, Sanderson, anyone else that might be leaders of sorts.
It's all water under the bridge now. It is not the address that was being used until recently.
I worry a bit about the members that have not been following, so would receive an email with new address. I really believe that an email needs to be sent to the members letting them know the new address. Sending emails does not cost me anything, but if you send a lot it may incur some cost?
I will help in any way that I can.

Re: Forum's address change
It is unfortunate that the forum address has changed. I was not aware of any pending change. As far as I know Forumotion did not notify the "leaders of sorts". It just happened. For a while the old forum address continued to work and was automatically converted to the new address in the URL header.littlejo wrote:Well TD, Sanderson, anyone else that might be leaders of sorts.

I believe there are hundreds if not thousands of users registered in this SFG forum. Unless there is a way to send out a global email to all members it would be a monumental task to send out emails to everyone. As well there will be some members who have not provided an email address or whose email address has changed since they registered.

Re: Forum's address change
There is another thing that needs to be investigated. I am wondering if our old forum address was not provided by forumotion. Perhaps it was instead a separate (paid for or free) domain that redirected to the forumotion address but which has now expired. Maybe Sanderson would know if such a separate domain name existed previously.

Re: Forum's address change
I see notices of replies on my email. Normally I just glace and delete as a block. I haven't tried clicking on one. Okay, I just tried and it had the new forumotion address. When I clicked on it it led me to the new site.Kelejan wrote:I have been going to my email account and reading posts and getting on to the Forum that way. Re: Forum's address change
I'll try to contact an original member to see if they had any knowledge of how we got our address.
I looked at Forumotion to see if they posted a notice of the change in address. Can't find anything.

Re: Forum's address change
That's what makes me think it was a domain change. I set up a test forum on forumotion a couple of years ago. I should try to find out what the address looked like.sanderson wrote:I'll try to contact an original member to see if they had any knowledge of how we got our address.

Re: Forum's address change
Searching around on the web re domain names I found this:
and this:
Domain Name: CREATINGFORUM.COM
Registry Domain ID: 981403541_DOMAIN_COM-VRSN
Registrar WHOIS Server: whois.godaddy.com
Registrar URL: http://www.godaddy.com
Updated Date: 2018-05-30T12:59:31Z
Creation Date: 2007-05-18T10:01:03Z
Registry Expiry Date: 2019-05-18T10:01:03Z

Based on the above I wonder if someone registered the name squarefoot.forumotion.com through godaddy???
Server info - Squarefoot.forumotion.com
- Where is squarefoot.forumotion.com hosted?
- IP: 94.23.159.185
- Registrar:
- Country: United Kingdom

This makes the most sense. Someone separately registered "creatingforum.com" as a domain name (then created the subdomain squarefoot.forumotion.com), the registration expired, and it was not renewed. The "creatingforum.com" domain may have always been a redirect to "forumotion.com". When it was not renewed, it now has defaulted to the original name. https://www.forumotion.com/create-forum-with-domain-name
Maybe in the beginning, it was hosted on creatingforum.com and moved to forumotion.com. To avoid the problem we're having now, they redirected all traffic to this site.
I wonder if the random email newsletter a few weeks ago had something to do with the name change? I wasn't signed up as a member then, but it may have been sent around the time the "move" took place. Could have been that the new link was included in that, just that no one really noticed.
