Is there a good book or website that can tell me about how much water and how often i should apply the water or is it a trial and kill thing I need to learn
Also would like to find out other general information
I did look at LSU's Ag center and got some information from there already

Hi Toastie,

Welcome to the Forum. I'm new too, but you'll find everyone here very nice and helpful. If you don't have a copy of the the New Square Foot Gardening book by Mel Bartholomew, you should pick one up. It's a really good source for lots of information including a section on watering. I followed it very closely and where I had questions I've asked the forum members for help. Seems to be working so far.

Good luck!

How much water Empty Re: How much water

Post  ColoradoNatureGirl 5/11/2010, 12:48 am

Hi and Welcome to the Forum!

I am new here as well.

When I first built my beds a couple of weeks ago I thought I soaked them pretty well but they seemed dried out every day. I had planted and nothing was coming up in the times suggested on the packages. So then I watered my beds until I had water seeping out the bottom like it suggest in the book. I had sprouts in a few days and am only watering every few days now.

Hope that helps a little!

The book is a HUGE help and I second Gloria's suggestion to pick it up.

How much water Empty Re: How much water

Mel's mix seems to be difficult to hydrate once it is dried out. We haven't had rain in three weeks, so I'm watering twice a day at present, pretty much following what Mel recommends, but also flying by the seat of my pants in some instances. In the morning, I use a sprayer and also water the empty squares, then in the late afternoon use the dipper method.

If you are not gardening in Mel's mix, see if you can find a copy of his original book -- I think www.half.com has some. His watering guide is a bit different in that due to gardening in soil rather than MM.
