Well, I finally got my mels mix going and planted potatoes to start off with. I watered real good, but the next day they sure felt dry. With the mix so loose how can you tell about how much and how often to water?Water 601593

Water Empty Watering Mel's Mix

Post  tomperrin 3/5/2012, 6:04 pm

In a new square box, I dump in a couple of pails of Mel's Mix, spread it out, and then water it well. Then I rake it again (if I'm not lazy that day) and water again. I repeat the process until the square is full. Mel's Mix, when properly saturated the first time will feel wet for a long time. I suspect that if it feels dry to you it may be because the mix was not properly wetted down the first time. Stick your hand down in the square, and see if it is wet all the way through. If it is in the least bit dry anywhere from top to bottom, thoroughly wet again.

The beauty of Mel's Mix is that you can't over water. BUT you can add too little water, in which case the growth and health of your plants will be less than optimum.

Did you stick your finger into the mix? The top can be dried out due to wind for example.

Because this MM was new to me and I didn't have my old feel and because we were using wicking beds and needed to know if the wick was REALLY working, I broke down and purchased a garden water tester. BTW, just below the surface the water was fine once the beds got fully hydrated the first time. Took a lot to get that peat wet through the first time around.

Thanks. This was helpful. I re-watered and it looks right, even after a highly windy day.Very Happy
