Re: Senseless Banter...
Great article, interesting she lived until 96 still gardening. What a successful life.
I have to say I would be one who belongs to the religion of mulching.
thanks for cutting and pasting CC

GWN - What is that thing you are holding between your fingers in your Avatar picture? I have many guesses but would love to know for sure.

It is a jasper geode I found while rockhounding this winter. It was my STAR find. My entire garden is covered with 3 feet of snow most of the winter, so we traveled south and spent the winter in the desert looking for cool rocks.

Re: Senseless Banter...
In another topic, Kate asked if there were official definitions of dirt, soil and compost.
Per Merriam-Webster:
Dirt - loose or packed soil or sand - earth
Soil - the upper layer of earth that may be dug or plowed and in which plants grow
Compost - mixture that consists largely of decayed organic matter and is used for fertilizing and condition land
In SFG language, compost is what we use in our Mel's Mix. A soil-less medium.

I guess it IS rather odd looking on a gardening forum, if you do not know what you are looking at.

Re: Senseless Banter...
Not really banter, but...
Had a MAJOR fire under one of our interstate bridges this evening. Part of the I-85 bridge-works collapsed just north of downtown Atlanta. This is going to be a mess for a while...... Thankfully none of the firefighters was injured.

Re: Senseless Banter...
Oh yeah.... One of the 2 major north/south arteries through the north part of the state & downtown Atlanta....
Re: Senseless Banter...
It is going to tie up traffic in every direction. Before the fire and collapse, during rush hour that was pretty much stop and go traffic in that area. Now drivers will have to use alternates which will then clog up I-75 and I-285 and I-20. What a mess. did they ever find out what started the fire. I never watch local news anymore. My daughter texted me last night to put on local news to see the fire and collapsed road.

I saw that on our Canadian National TV. So much infrastructure trouble in both our countries. Regular maintenance is crucial, to anything that we humans build.
Re: Senseless Banter...
They made 3 arrests last night in connection with the fire. Two are simply charged with trespassing. The other is charged with arson. Long criminal history, apparently...
In yesterday's press conference, it will probably be Labor Day before the repairs are completed. 300+ foot sections on both north & southbound will have to be replaced.
And I agree Kelejan!

I was wanting to expand my gardening a little more with some more diverse crops, does anybody know where I can find some bacon seeds or cheese burger seeds?

I was going through some of my mother's old Birds & Blooms magazines and came across a funny article about composting. The graphic is priceless. Could this by any chance be our very own Queen of Composting, none other than sanderson?
