Re: California's Drought
Sounds like we have the same weather forecast. Light rain and drizzle today with a storm expected during the night. The gutters were cleaned this fall so all systems draining away from the house are operable.
Re: California's Drought
Some relief is on the way, sounds like. (((((Fingers crossed)))))

Re: California's Drought
I'll take rain and clouds over the Geminid Meteor Shower. Wish they didn't happen at the same time, but it is so nice to have some rain. Well, not like the Pacific Northwest is having, but you know, just some normal rain.
Re: California's Drought
The rain was really falling hard at 4:48 this morning when it woke me up!!! Good amount of gentle rain all afternoon yesterday. We lost power in the afternoon.
Re: California's Drought
.8" in Carmel Valley! The ground is soaking it up like a sponge. Now I'm looking at all kinds of weeds sprouting from dormant seeds. The lupine and California poppies are sprouting up through the rye grass in the field in front of my house- can't wait for them to start blossoming. The rains have knocked down all the apricot and plum leaves leaving the trees looking pretty bare. The apple leaves are finally turning shades of gold, as they are finally going to go dormant. They had it pretty rough with the long drought, and this last season I didn't even get 10% of the usual crop- the neighbor's trees didn't even bear fruit. I hope that the rains keep up at the pace we've seen; enough to give the ground a good soaking, but not so much that any flooding occurs.

0.8" is sweet! Do you leave the leaves around the trees as mulch/future compost? Wood chips? Keeping the trees alive and minimally producing is great. I hope we have rain into June this year.
Re: California's Drought
The only figure I saw for Squaw Valley was 1.07 inches. I think we got more than that at our location. All of it soaked in nicely. YAY!
The winds and rain knocked all the leaves off of our Cottonwood trees and fruitless plum. Once it dries a bit I need to blow them up into my garden. I usually do that then dust the ground with enough compost to hold the leaves in place and the worms take care of them over the winter.

Rain "expected" today and for another 9 days, with a small break tomorrow. El Nino?

This is from the Associated Press so I don't know when it was written or the complete context.

Fresno received 3" of rain in December.

Re: California's Drought
I don't doubt that the Valley is sinking due to aquifer depletion. Much the same happened to the Southern California coast due to oil pumping. In my area they are proposing groundwater replenishment with "purified", treated waste water. They claim it's a proven technology, and site it's successful use in the space programs. The only glitch in that application, as I see it, is that reclaimed water in the space station is from the astronaut's waste. Our reclamation source is from unknown industrial waste, road/storm drain run-off, and from recycled sewage. Garbage in- garbage out!

Re: California's Drought
Scary stuff, Yardslave.
Just imagine what stuff the could pump in to "get rid of it"? Stuff from fracking, pesticides, oilspill from pipelines etc. Who would be overseeing all this?

Re: California's Drought
Who opposes it? Let's just say that the the majority in the area are as complacent as a flock of sheep grazing in a field of marijuana. The corporation that is pushing this are the ones wooing the local politicos and blitzing the air with media hype. People have very short memories; our waste treatment facilities have been fined huge amounts for releasing untreated waste water back into the bay- now they can just pump it underground where no one will notice. Hope it doesn't catch on in the Valley.

Forecast for Fresno: 2" of rain this week! More or less for other areas. Let's report in Thursday or Friday for total rainfall numbers, including Sierra snowfall. I got most of the beds covered but ran out of giant binder clips for the last 3.
Re: California's Drought
Wait, wait. Are you putting up covers because of cold or rain. If it is for rain, only very tender veggies would need any type protection because of raised beds and MM. We just had 15 inches of rain last month. Most in one day was 4 inches. Everything in the garden came through ok except the lettuce. Too much rain and cloudy weather the whole month caused the lettuce leaves to just rot.sanderson wrote:Forecast for Fresno: 2" of rain this week! More or less for other areas. Drizzle here this morning, but looks like anywhere from 2" to 5" expected- depending which weatherman you want to believe.
