Re: California's Drought
Glad you have had a little rain. You need lots and lots and lots without flash floods.
Re: California's Drought
I'm sending you guys & gals over the pond 89 % of our quality rain by transcendental mediation as I'm fed up with the torrents of it that we have has this last three days .

Re: California's Drought
So... as to rain. We're supposed to get rain tomorrow - the ONE day I don't want rain, LOL!
Our youngest daughter and her husband are pregnant and tomorrow we are having a "Gender reveal party" where we will find out if it's a boy or girl. She invited the whole world and we have a modest 1600 sq ft. house!!! Originally it was supposed to be 70 and sunny like it was today and this week it decided to be a party spoiler and rain!
We'll just have to cuddle up

We are getting a whole lot of rain these days and any time I have a thought about complaining I think about you guys and count our blessings. You know, the Hawaiians think rain is a blessing.

Re: California's Drought
Many areas of California will get some rain today, Sunday. Well, maybe not the desert. Audrey, I'm so sorry you will have a packed house tomorrow with not out doors for people to spread out. You will tell us if it's a girl or boy, won't you? Congratulations to your family.
Rosina, rain is wonderful but I know enough is enough.
Plantoid, I'll check back with you this summer! Thanks for the offer.

Of course I'll share I want it to be a girl but I think it's a boy. We'll see. I'm usually uncannily accurate on these things. We have two grandsons already and the grandparents on the other side of the family have the same and had 3 sons, so they produce BOYS, BOYS, BOYS!!! I'm ready for some pink glitter and sparkles.
Re: California's Drought
Know what you mean. After 2 wonderful boys, I was so happy to have a girl. Just balance the snails and puppy tails with pink and frills.

If you have a girl I do hope she is not a tom-boy. But I am sure you will love her in spite of something like that.
Re: California's Drought
Our newest grand baby will be a grandson! We had 35 people piled up in our house in the rain - it was a grand time. We also found out today that a young couple that are our kids best friends and like kids to us, are also expecting. They miscarried earlier in the year so they're pretty excited about this. All around great day!
Re: California's Drought
So how long will it take before I can train him to be my garden helper? I'm guessing 3 years - I guess I'll have to wait, LOL!
Re: California's Drought
Scotland ......yesterday .morning ..... 8 inches of rain in about seven hours , driven side ways by 70 mph gales followed by snow in the early hours of this morning .
Here 600 miles or so South we've got off lightly . We only got 4 inches of rain in 12 hrs and the winds were not much above 40 mph. Snow not expected over much of the UK till the weekend but it is getting rather brassy outside tonight at a mere 350 foot above sea level .

Re: California's Drought
Ooh, Plantoid, that sounds right nasty weather that you and Scotland are having. I hope there are no floods.
Had to smile when you wrote that you got off lightly compared to Scotland. All relative, I suppose.

Re: California's Drought
Sanderson, where do you find the rain totals? At one point last night, Wunderland said rain was falling at 6.5 inches per hour in our area. We had a crazy thunderstorm with winds, huge lightning, hail and torrential rains for a couple hours. The heaviest rain was probably 1/2 an hour or so. I'd love to know what our rain total here was
California drought
We have rain gauges, both here in the lowlands and in Koke`e at 3500 ft. We have been tracking amounts since 1988.
Every morning that it has rained I ask Ed, the keeper of the gauge, how much we had. It is interesting information.
Our gauges look something like this, a long tube with numbers in inches. http://www.klockit.com/zoom_img/16014.jpg

Honestly, farmers way, just stick a cup out here, any cup, that is how much rain ya got, unless there's a lot of wind....that will diminish the rain catch.

Re: California's Drought
I use Weather Channel, but I will tell you, I can't find any numbers for Dunlap, SQ, Miramonte or Hume Lake RS that are much above the 0.3" of rain that Fresno got. Expanding on SR's idea, I think a bucket, with a heavy metal weight it in to secure against the wind, in a clear area, is your best gauge. Remove the weight and check to height of water. You may be in a micro-storm pocket.audrey.jeanne.roberts wrote:Sanderson, where do you find the rain totals?
Re: California's Drought
My daughter's mother-in-law lives up the hill a ways and she had 1 inch. US National Weather Service in Hanford said we had 1 inch as well. A friend told me about this site: The https://www.facebook.com/search/top/?q=us%20national%20weather%20service
Re: California's Drought
Fresno, CA has received 2.23" since October 1!
Who received some snow Tuesday?

Re: California's Drought
We got 1/3" of rain Tuesday and I haven't had to turn the drip system on in two weeks. This morning the whole yard is covered with frost- everything's white outside. I covered my citrus trees up last night because I had a feeling it would get frosty, even though the weather forecast said no frost. The parsley, kale, chard, and alliums all tolerated the chill, but time will tell.

Re: California's Drought
It looks like No Cal will get some rain starting tomorrow, Thursday. Fresno may get up to 1/2" Thursday-Friday. Maybe a bit more on Sunday. Everyone ready? Wish I had room for rain barrels.
Re: California's Drought
Just a light drizzle here, but tonight things may get going good. I've had to forgo the rain barrels in favor of ducting the downspouts out, away from the house- we're on a slab that's pretty close to grade, so I want to keep water from accumulating around the base of the house. The garden's showing signs of relief from the drought, but it's a long way from resolved. I haven't had to water for the last two weeks, so I'm sorry I didn't put a little more effort into planting and a little less effort in water conservation.
