How early broccoli seedlings
For those of us on the West side of the continent we are experiencing uncharacteristic warm weather.
Our last frost average date is May 1st and no sign of frost right now
I have started several cool weather crops indoors and they have sprouted.
I am wondering if I can just plant them out in the beds now, because you can apparently plant the seeds out there now??

If you plant them outside, guarantee there will be a cold snap! Like washing your car guarantees rain. If you don't plant them, the warm weather will continue and you will kick yourself. Imagine being a farmer and having your whole livelihood depend on flipping that coin.
Re: How early broccoli seedlings
Well... you are right, but these veggies are supposed to survive a cold snap...
And everywhere I read suggests to plant seed now, but what about seedlings?
The other biggie is the watering. All our hoses are BLOWN OUT... and we do not get that all set up until the last freeze is over.
I think I will try it with the plan to cover them if it gets cold

Re: How early broccoli seedlings
I was trying to make a funny but didn't translate. I was picturing some 100-year late Arctic blast. I'm not an expert, but it seems right to plant the seedlings. I'm backwards. I just pulled out the brassicas/coles because we are getting too warm. I planted seedlings Oct 1 and enjoyed them all winter.
Re: How early broccoli seedlings
GWN....we just planted our cole crop seedlings yesterday, and covered them with garden fabric.....we too are having another warm early spring it seems..... so we took a chance and planted them....we did the same thing last year and they did great even though our last frost date is not until April 15th....we shouldn't get any hard freeze and cold crops can handle some frost plus if we continue to have warmer weather and we wait....... we take a chance of it getting to warm and our cole crops will want to bolt.....its crazy....our weather pattern here at our PNW gardens is so unpredictable!

Re: How early broccoli seedlings
Hi Sanderson, I DID get your funny, ....but could not think of something funny to add.
Rose, do you put out the seedlings to harden them a little first?
I am doing something different this year and the seedlings are packed tight in a small 4 inch pot, with the plans of skipping the small pot stage. So I am a little leery of putting the bare seedling into the ground
I am following the Market Gardener way of doing things in bulk, but cannot find out exactly what they do next

Re: How early broccoli seedlings
I did sit the seedlings out for a couple of days for a few hours and then transplanted them in to the beds and covered them with garden fabric....so far they all look very happy!GWN wrote:Hi Sanderson, I DID get your funny, ....but could not think of something funny to add.

here is a great video on how this gardener separates his seedlings when he plants them thick.....very cool idea!.....if you want to skip the beginning of his turkeys and goats.....go to min 17.....that's when he starts to talk about the seedlings

Re: How early broccoli seedlings
Thank you ROSE, I always like to listen to that guy.
The video was very helpful and I am still needing to know how to just plant those seedlings like he planted in the pot.... OUTDOORS.
What he has described is what I am doing with all my tomato and pepper plants, in doors and his water bath made great sense.
I am just not sure that a seedling with bare roots can deal with the outdoors
What I did think up yesterday was to create a clump of soil around the roots of each one as I plant them, which would mimic the pot.
I shall keep you posted

Re: How early broccoli seedlings
GWN, have any wild brassicas come up in your garden? How about seeding some radish or raab? If they come up then go ahead and plant your seedlings, the soil temperature is warm enough. At this tender age put each in a slight bowl of soil and then cover with a row cover. The row cover will protect from too much sun and too much cold. The bowl acts to keep the row cover off the babies and is also a temperature fly wheel, helping keep cool in the day and warm at night. Good luck

I am making plans to work with a variety of broccoli called "Marathon." For what it's worth, this hybrid is supposed to be very cold resistant.
