Is it too early ??
Is it too early to get 5 different brands of composts ?? So far I've only been able to find 2 different brands .. One was manure and the other was actual compost, both being sold by Lowes ...
I was just curious as to get an idea of pricing and such ...
Thanks in advance !

I hope its too early! I have found Black Cow, Leafgro and "Compost Manure." I don't know what type of manure that last one is but I hope its not cow and it counts for another one of the 5. I am building the beds and putting in what I have and leaving some space to add in more compost.

Tux, it's time to think outside of the box (store)!
Hit up the local grain store, ask about any farmers around that may have composted manure available, check the Farmer's market, post a request on Freecycle ( a Yahoo group), try Craig's list. Google horse and dairy farms in your area. There's tons of it out there, no kidding!

Re: Is it too early ??
It is never too early. If it's compost you want to use right away you will probably need to purcase everything. Look at various garden, home improvement, and big-box centers to find all the different types of compost you need. There is cow manure, cotton bur, mushroom compost, etc.
To be ready for next year or fall gardening, start a compost pile and look for sources of material to compost on your own...horse boarding stables often give away a mix of manure and bedding straw...add mulched leaves (chopped up with a lawn mower), approved kitchen scraps, earthworm castings, chichen manure, cow manure, grass clippings, etc. (there's a list in the book).

Humus is not what I considered a compost. It is like sphagnum (peat) moss, a soil conditioner, adding tilth to the soil or growing medium.

Not sure if you're anywhere close to Aberdeen, MD, but Veteran Compost is open year-round and have FABULOUS compost & vermicompost.

Use to live in PG county a long time ago, and had friends in and around aberdeen..
It'd be a bit of a haul just for compost, especially with gas prices as they are..
I'll see what all I can find around here, in my area..

More than you think if you rip out all those extra seats! OR how big a UHaul trailer can you pull with a Corolla?

In my neck of the woods, sometimes bags that say "Manure Compost" have peat in them. CHECK THE INGREDIENTS LIST on the back of the bag to be sure.

If you know any one that keeps bunnies their manure can be mixed right in without composting and will not burn your plants.

Re: Is it too early ??
Lol, great, now I don't feel so bad about the bunny that came into my garden, nibbled some leftover greens (that are somehow miraculously still growing), and left me a little "compost".
Re: Is it too early ??
Had bunny troubles last year where they were cleaning out my sprouts ..
Found that I had a whole family of them under our shed..
Needless to say I had to put a STOP to that...

You should have seen my husbands face when I asked for help unloading some soil--He was thinking quart bags-Ha! I fit 20 CF of compost and a car seat (containing a very excited 4 y/o) in my Honda Civic.
