Looks great! I used straw like you use last year, and it really helped retain moisture. Very handy indeed in our brutal summers.

Heh, that is really cute! And I'd love to see pictures of your nasturtiums in full bloom.

Unfortunately, it takes quite a lot of soil to fill cinderblock holes. I've wanted to grow in them for a while, but it would be quite a project to fill the double-layer cinderblock beds I use (courtesy of a kindly neighbor who lets me use his beds) with soil. Still, what a perfect place for flowers ... and what a great way to attract pollinators right up close to your veggies that need pollinating!

MomVet - My first Square Foot Garden - Page 2 Empty Cinder Block Soil

Post  zackshea 5/29/2015, 8:20 am

We actually just used the soil we dug up for the garden beds to fill the cinder blocks 3/4 of the way up then topped off with MM.  Nasturtiums do well with poor soil anyway.  Since my yard slopes a little, we had to dig down a few inches in places and that produced a lot of extra topsoil.

Your little helper is adorable! Unfortunately, my little helpers (grandchildren) are too far away to help often - I would LOVE to instill the "bug" in them early. I grew up with non-gardening parents and was convinced from my houseplant debacles that I had a "brown thumb". Luckily my first attempt at vegetable gardening was a success! I have been unable to grow nasturtiums (or much of anything) in the past few years and am SO happy that they are thriving now. May have overdone it a little.

You just simply cannot have too many nasturtium!

I can't wait for them to bloom.  I planted a lot of different varieties!

I thought it might be time for an update! I am so glad I found SFG (well, I read the first book so I didn't actually "find" it!)! Despite some pest issues, I have had an unbelievable harvest from such a small space! I'm in drought country but so far the Mel's Mix and mulch has kept things moist. I should have taken more pictures, but so far I have eaten radishes, lettuce, beets, arugula, carrots, zucchini (from my bag), cucumbers, turnips (greens for Mr. T), green onions, herbs, strawberries (a few), swiss chard, snap peas...I may have left something out! Oh, the nasturtiums, cosmos and zinnias are great (but it is getting really hot now so not sure how long my beloved nasturtiums will last). I am seeing eggplant and tons of tomatoes (my first cherries are just turning red). I even have baby corn and the sunflowers are up. I am a pretty happy camper. Disappointed that I am not seeing worms (I found one when I dug up my one sickly-looking tomato) but overall, thanks in big part to you folks, I'm thrilled.

They are Royal Burgundy Bush - first time ever. Both of my bush beans did great, pole beans in the container I finally took out and the new ones look OK. I did plant some Kentucky Wonders on my corn cage and they look pretty good too. I am a happy camper but it is so hot right now - nasturtiums are drooping, greens are bolting -so we will see!

Ah, same as I planted last year and planted again this year. So beautiful, and tasty too! Mine are just starting to form flower buds. They are tough, hardy plants, and produced well into fall for me. They've made my list as something I'll plant every single year from now on.

I grew a purple pole variety a couple years ago, and I forgot until now how much easier to find to harvest they are, too!  As well as delicious.  Mine turned green when cooked I remember.  Note to self.   Kathy, congrats all around!

Well, I started this thread and even though the garden isn't looking great right now (so far, our inland SoCal summer has been brutal), I feel obligated to show how it's coming along. The bush beans have done great and next year I will plant more. Lettuce, carrots, radishes..ditto. My beloved nasturtiums and well as the lettuce, beets, turnips and kale have come and gone. As have the cucumbers - I got about 10 out of 6 plants - lots of "babies" that looked like little black pickles. Still have onions, chives, scallions, and swiss chard hanging on. I can't seem to grow squash anymore, even though I used to have to give it away. I have a couple of zucchini in a big bag that look OK, but haven't gotten many actual vegetables. I just pulled the two pattypans that started out OK, turned yellow and shriveled.  The trombocini I planted still looks fairly healthy and is climbing the trellis but I only see male flowers. The potatoes are yellowing and being eaten by something. I have dug around and - nothing. The only things that are doing well now are bush beans (almost gone), corn and pole beans (well, they look OK), tomatoes and peppers (so..so) and eggplant. Oh zinnias too. Anyway, I am not UNHAPPY because this is the best garden that I have had in years. Here are a few pics:
