This forum looks great.  I grew up on a farm with the big, traditional garden, where weeds and grass usually overran it by mid July.  I have done a few smaller gardens here in Houston with mixed success.  Currently living in a condo with a sizable balcony and a son who has recently gotten really fired up about gardening (it all started with a sweet potato I kept too long which he questioned, which we then sprouted and planted), so I came across the New SFG book at the library a few days ago.  I have literally devoured the book and decided that is a much better alternative to growing a few things in pots.  So, we built our first 2 x 4 box yesterday, with materials for three more, which I dont plan to do all at once.  I have picked up a lot here at this forum already and look forward to much more.
Thanks,
Tom

Welcome to the forum Tom.  I live in the general vicinity of AtlantaMarie.  This method has been good for me because of the horrible GA red clay in my area.  Honestly, I did not have many alternatives.

I think you will enjoy your time here.  I also devoured the book right after I got it.  This is my second year and I am loving it!

 glad you\'re here

TG, my daughter is also 12.  She has really developed a love for gardening (both flowers and vegetables).  Given a choice between using her space for a flower or a vegetable... she will go for the vegetable.  She did not feel that way the beginning of our first season, but now she realizes how wonderful it is to eat yummy fresh food from her own garden.  Flowers are "filler."

Enjoy your garden and enjoy your special time with your son!

For those with children that like to garden with you, you are giving them a life-long tool. Someday they will go off to college or move for a job, but sometime, even if it's after their own kids have left the nest, they will return to it. Mean while, they will say, "Oh, my folks grew garlic, okra, corn [fill in the blank] and it was so good, so much better than store bought."  Very Happy
