Finally got some needed rain today...decided to take a few more pics after the sun came out.

My SFG boxes at home...empty squares should be planted with cauliflower, broccoli, cabbage, beets and carrots withing the next week for the fall.

My helper with a couple beauties at the community garden...we'll head there this evening to pick our first watermelon as the nearest tendril and spoon leaf were about withered down.

Black Cherry tomatoes..sweet and tasty.

Chelsea Prize cukes picked almost every day.

I've started sifting and storing compost to get ready for the fall garden.

A milkweed in the pollinator garden...can't determine which one (green and white flowers).

Swamp Milkweed...not seeing hardly any butterflies this year and my pollinator garden is in fool bloom.

Onions...salsa time.

Pearly Pink tomatoes at home in the SFG.

San Marzano tomatoes at home in the SFG...salsa tomato.  We put up 7 jars of salsa and 14 jars of juice so far this year.  We purchased an outdoor propane burner stand to keep the heat outside.

A few tomatoes from the community garden...perfect for BLT's with friends and family...Dakota Gold, Black Krim, Carbon, Hillbilly, Rutgers, Pink Brandywine...looks like a Fat N' Sassy pepper snuck in...we'll definitely grow this pepper again as the plants are loaded with big, blocky, thick-walled peppers perfect for stuffing.

garden pics Empty Butterfly Milkweed

Post  Windmere 8/4/2014, 10:46 am

Landarch, those are some gorgeous photos!  My wife and I were looking at them together and we got excited when we saw your photo of the butterfly milkweed.  We have something similar growing wild at the back of our house.  The hummingbirds seem to love it and I've been trying to figure out what it is so I can plant some more.  Do hummingbirds come to your milkweed?  The orange flowers look almost exactly like those on our plants.

Windmere, I haven't seen hummingbirds on the milkweed flowers...can you post a pic of yours and maybe we can determine what it may be (I may not be familiar with some plants in your area).

Trumpet Vine has really nice orange flowers that attract hummers...but that is much different than a milkweed plant that should attract butterflies.

I also have a correction...the green and white flowers I posted are Snow on the Mountain, not a milkweed.

I just came in from trying to photo some of the orange flowers, but alas, they are all faded.  I looked up the trumpet flowers, but they are not a match (however, I wish they were because those are beautiful).  I will keep an eye out for more blossoms and photo them when they happen.

Landarch - I think that the plant with green and white flowers is a Euforb and not a milkweed, we've always called it Snow-On-The- Mountain:

What a beautiful harvest Landarch. The onion pic looks like something I'd see in a food magazine.

I see your black cherries look so yummy. This is my second year growing them and I find they always have a bit of a green crown and they stay that way, so I end up picking them before they bust. Do you run into that problem?

Thanks,

I think my black cherry color remains pretty consistent...the only greening I see is when one may be over-ripe and gets blasted with intense sun...kinda has a green veining going on with a soft spot.

I picked about a gallon last night and made a tri-color pasta salad for lunch today.  These little things are sweet.
