Oh yes! Smile I hope both trees produce edible fruit. It'd be really nice to have fresh avocados and mangos.

My sister raised an avocado from a pit in her house in NY and it gave them fruit. Not much. but it DID fruit.

I do not know, she lives on the other side of the country from me. I have heard of others raising them in windows and getting fruit that was useable though.

I used to live in San Diego where there are lots of avocados. I was told that avocados have both male and female flowers, but they open at the other opposite part of the day from each other. So the pollination occurs where there is some over lap in the middle of the day I guess. Some types open males in the morning and females in the afternoon and then some vice versa. So to get a greater yield you need one of each type. But only one tree will still have fruit, and sometimes lots of it.

Well, the seeds, that you now show growing, where did you get them? - at the Grocery-store?, or from a friends tree?, or where else? - most likely you can get all you want Smile
When we lived in Fla. mom decided to try planting one, "just one" she said, from the Supermarket. Oh sure, in a couple years she had no less than 6 bounce trees each of Avocado & Mango. Good Lord! we had them coming out of our ears, & they are so Yummy. Good for you too. - Now I see in this thread they even grow in NY ? - Well in that case, I'm starting some right now Very Happy

Experimenting, mom preferred Avocado-seeds that already had the Sprout peeking out for greater success. She poked 3 toothpicks into each seed, and set it in a one ounce water-glass with the Seed-bottom barely contacting the water, in a shaded East-kitchen window. Daily she'd talk Wink to all her over 200 various plants: always remember this successful ingredient. And honest engine they grew like gangbusters.
(off-topic:
she also resuscitated dead plants. Nobody believed that, 'til she proved it. That lady had talent oozing outa her like no tomorrow). Oopps, okay back on topic Smile

Although a lot of trees like a pollinator, often they do fine by themselves. Not always critical. I want avocado, orange, lime, and apple. Banana and mango would be nice but too much frost. The only problem with growing avocados by seed is that they take so long to grow.

I agree they are taking so long to grow from seed. I want my fresh fruits now darn it! lol As for where we got our first seed, I'm not a 100% sure where we got it anymore. I think we got it from a friend but I couldn't tell you which friend or where they got it from.

We got apple seeds planted too. In three separate places. Two sets are indoors and one is directly in the ground outside. The seeds we got from a customer's place who got the apples from farmer's market I believe.

I want to grow at least two of every fruit trees. I like variety in my fruit.
