Fall garden when and what to plant
I live near Lake Michigan near the IL/Wis boarder and would like to grow a fall garden.
What can I plant and when should I start them?

I would recommend you do some research for your zone. A lot of information is available online and with your local extention service. A lot of information is available if you take some time to research. I would think you have a fairly short growing season so far north. Here is a link to a page in the almanac for Chicago.

Contact your local Master Gardeners and/or your state university's agricultural extension service. They will not only have planting and harvesting timing information tailored to your particular area, but will also be able to recommend particular varieties of vegetables which work there best, which diseases and bugs tend to be the biggest problems there and when they tend to come out most, etc. etc.
That will all be invaluable to you, as it will be science-based and tailored to what works for you and not somebody else somewhere else. The web and books can be very confusing, as often even among very bright and learned and experienced people, there's an easy assumption that when they're talking about what works for their location, that advice/knowledge is equally applicable everywhere. But it is not.
