I pulled my pea plants this week since they finally stopped giving me pods Sad. I want to plant some more for a fall harvest but I am not sure when I need to get the seeds going inside.

I'm wondering the same thing and I think I'm in the same zone. Hope someone knows. Love sugar peas but now would not be good time to replant for me. Yikes, tomorrow is supposed to be 95 here.

I just planted my broccoli seeds inside today. I know it may be a bit early, but our weather has been so strange that I am afraid with this really early spring it may mean a really early fall and winter. However, broccoli is different than peas. I would rather set mine out early and just have them static for a bit rather than too late and not getting any crop. It is an experiment, I know, but it will be interesting to see what happens.

I have to decide what I am going to plant. I wanted to do some broccolli but I only have 5 squares that will be open and I really want to do another round of peas and I am afraid that the size that broccoli tends to get it will hurt my tomatoes and peppers.

I know my girlfriend would love it if I moved to canada but I don't think the military would.

I'd probably wait until the middle part of July for sugar peas.

My kids and grand kids are coming today. I was outdoors a bit ago - about 7:30 and the humidity was already nuts. About 77 here at 7:30. I went out to the east side of my house where my gardens are and found that the tomato plants had grown quite a bit overnight. Knowing this heat will just about do them in I think I'll have the hose handy to cool them down with a mist. Poor little things. The corn crops in the fields surrounding my property are looking pretty desperate. Curled up leaves begging for moisture and relief.

I shouldn't complain. I could live in the SW where the drought and fires are running rampant or the east coast with the awful storms.

Forecast for today says possible thunderstorms. Radar currently shows nothing. So, hopefully that will change so that we can get some moisture tonight.

Yesterday I came home to wilted strawberry plants. Watered them and checked a couple of hours later - they were all perky again. The wonders of water.

I think I'll plant the peas late July. If it doesn't work - well, just a few seed down the tubes.

How about radishes and lettuce? Late July, early August or could that wait?

When to plant for fall? Empty What about us in the SW?

Post  Luke Allen 7/9/2012, 9:49 am

I live in west Texas and want to have a fall garden also. I have
never had one but am willing to try. I ordered some cabage and
brocoli plants which they told me that they will be delivered about
the middle of October. I think this should be OK but don't really
know. Any suggestions from you of much knowledge? What else
could I plant? Can I plant shallots at this time?

Find your first frost date here, if you have one.
http://davesgarden.com/guides/freeze-frost-dates/

Then use the charts in the ANSFG book, starting on page 252, to find planting schedules.

I'm not very familiar with your climate; you may be working around the heat rather than the cold. If you make a post in your regional forum, you'll find folks more familiar with your growing conditions that can be more help.

In the Kansas City area, spring is our only hope for snap peas...fall plantings are not recommended by the local extension service.

SFGs plant a lot of things not recommended. Laughing We love to push envelopes. Soooooo, If you have the real estate, count back from your average first frost date and put some peas in the ground. A little water and maybe some shade cloth during Aug. until the vines start climbing. You might get a pleasant surprise.
