First Harvest
Have a few things that were harvested today. A few strawberries and some scapes and all of my multiplier onions which are now in a safe place to cure.
I planted 4 squares of onions and they did way better than last year. I think planting them in the same place is a good idea.
Any suggestions as to what I could plant in those squares now?
What to do with scapes. I have lots in the refrigerator right now. Hmmmm.

Lovely harvest. Feels good, right?
I put my skapes in a baggie in the freezer. They thaw out the same as they went in. GG, are those multiplier onions the same as potato onions?

Yes, they are potato onions.CapeCoddess wrote:Lovely harvest. Feels good, right?

So I don't have to blanch the skapes?
Saving the strawberries in the freezer until they have stopped bearing. Hard to not want to sit and eat them as I pick but...

Re: First Harvest
I think you can use the scapes as is...I just minced them up with rosemary, green onion, and some chive to make an herb butter for grilled red potatoes.

Re: First Harvest
I sauteed them in butter and then toasted it on french bread to make garlic bread.

That sounds like a great idea. I'll try it soon. I have some rosemary and chives. Thanks.landarch wrote:I think you can use the scapes as is...I just minced them up with rosemary, green onion, and some chive to make an herb butter for grilled red potatoes.

Re: First Harvest
Now that my shelling peas are done - wonder if it would make sense to plant more in the squares that had my multiplier onions. If so, being in zone 4, when would be a good time to plant them? The average first frost is middle of September, I think.

Re: First Harvest
Tried to find pea seeds this time of year. Missed it by 1 day. The seeds were picked up by the distributor. Hmm. Thought there would be some so I could plant some more peas.
What else could I plant that would go into the fall before frost? I am zone 4. No broccoli, etc. I'm really not wanting any more of that for a while.

Re: First Harvest
Sounds like a plan. Thanks. Have to plant something where the onions and garlic were. Can't leave that many squares empty. Next spring I will put most of it into peas.camprn wrote:kohlrabi, beets, carrots, rapini, pattypan squash
