Mid-South in May - 2014
In my N Atlanta area, apples are finishing their blooming, peaches & pears are growing and in need of taking off a LOT of babies, pecans leaves are popping out, blueberries are still blooming to a certain extent. Looks like a good season!
Mike's getting ready to build more boxes tomorrow. These'll be 4'x12' or so.
I still have to plant the Golden Jubilee tomato, Greek Basil, & honeydews that jumped in the truck with the vermiculite the other night.
But we have SUNSHINE today! Woo-hoo!

Got our new box built today!

This is the latest view from the gate. As you can see, there is 4' between the boxes on the left (north) side and 5' on the right (south) side. Mike wanted to make sure we had plenty of room to move the mower, wheelbarrow, & my wagon around as needed.

Plants are starting to fill up & out.
Corn:

Watermelon:

Okra:

New honeydew we just planted yesterday:

Greek Basil, bee balm, tomatoes:

All in all, it's been a good day!

Looks awesome AtlantaMarie! Nothing prettier than a new SFG...except maybe a new SFG full of veggies! So glad those hitchhiking vegetables found a good home!

Thanks Lyndeeloo! At least now I have some more boxes to fill up.
Although Mike DID say that he wants to keep 1/2 of them empty for now so we have some space for later lettuce, etc.
I hear the garden center calling me.... Must obey....
Must... buy... plants....

Marie, You are going to have an outstanding SFG when everything is built and planted. Not that it isn't outstanding now, but you know what I mean. Humungous! With plenty of working room and sun
Are you going to put a cattle panel arch somewhere in the middle, and a table with 2 chairs . . ??

Re: Mid-South in May - 2014
The ten day forecast for me is - lows 52 - 60, Highs 78 - 84. So now I am ready to plant my tomatoes tomorrow (Saturday). That way I can eliminate any cold weather from the cause of stress on the tomatoes. Maybe when the diseases all start they will have a fighting chance of surviving.

Re: Mid-South in May - 2014
I've certainly thought about the arch idea! That may be in the future. I've seen some VERY cool photos of gourds & tomatoes hanging from them. Right now I just want to get everything built and in there! (And dream about 2nd & 3rd stories for some of the beds, lol.)
About the only chair I'll have room for will be the little plastic 12" high kneeler/stool thingy Mike was kind enough to get for me. Of course, I have my wagon too! It's fairly comfortable now that I have some plywood on the bottom.
On the interior beds, we're only going to put 3' between them. I figured that I don't really need to haul the wheelbarrow through those areas after we get done with them. Heck, I won't need it anywhere, but Mike insisted we leave the space. Just in case. And I have to agree... He's a wise man about looking into the future...
I'm showing a low of 52 tonight. That's the coolest it will be for the next few days apparently. The highs are supposed to be 84-85 for the next week (after today).

Thanks LM. Me too! Unfortunately I haven't been able to go out & play today. Had friends up and had to spend time w/ them.
But they did see the garden and were properly impressed!

Re: Mid-South in May - 2014
Mike is probably being pretty smart about that. If you ever need the room to move about but don't have it, you'll really regret it. And I'm probably not the only one who has ever filled up a wheelbarrow so high I tipped it over sideways by mistake. That extra foot in your aisles may prevent future disasters.
Your area sure looks great. All that planting area filled with good soil should make for gardening heaven.

I have to reluctantly agree, Marc. Mike is super-safety conscious. And heaven knows I've tipped over my share of wheelbarrow loads, lol!
Thank you! I'm very excited. Going out to play after I finish going thru the latest posts. It's another pretty morning. And Mike's already opened the garage. But I want to get done before it hits 84 this afternoon...

I love SFG!
We have had a full house in for class the last couple of days. On one of the breaks, some of Mike's students went out to look at the garden.
Turns out one of them is family to the owner's of Bonnie's Plants. She immediately knew it was SFG and got all excited asking me about how I like SFG, etc. (She was also happy to see some Bonnie's tabs in the ground, lol.)
Another is OCD like me and had figured that gardening was out for him. It was just too overwhelming. But his comment after looking around was, "I can DO this!" He really likes the organization.

The hot muggy, muggy days of Summer have arrived here in Georgia. High today will be about 85-88 F and projected to be 90 F tomorrow. Humidity is about 90%.

RAIN! Finally! Was down to about 75 gallons in my 330 gallon tote. Looks like it should last at least all morning.
So much for pictures today...

Re: Mid-South in May - 2014
Okay AtlantaMarie, where are recent pictures of your garden. I have been fighting diseases and pests all summer but I am still getting a fair harvest.
What about you.
What about you.
