2014 gardening today in Mid. South (or elsewhere)
I built a seed starting station in my basement out of materials on hand (or free).
DIY heating mat with a rope light (googled for easy plans), hung 4 fluorescent tubes with chains and s-hooks, plugged into multi-strip, plugged multi-strip into timer (had to buy that with Lowe's Christmas gift card). And potted up my first go-round of sweet peppers in Jiffy mix in Jiffy rounds (also already on hand).
Sweet Peppers
Bells: Giant Chinese red, Grand mix, Mini mix, & Purple Beauty
Longs: Banana, Cubanelle, Hungarian Yellow Wax, & Long Mix
And I harassed Ace Hardware employees about setting their transplants in direct sun on asphalt like they did last year. I'm sure they appreciated my kindly advice.
Whachu'all doing for your 2014 gardens today (or this week)?

Today was a gorgeous sunny warm day (72*F now at 7:15pm). I couldn't stay inside so I turned my compost pile. It is full of worms which is unusual for my garden. I am finally getting it all together.
I keep looking at the seed catalogues but never get around to ordering.

Hi yolos. Nice to see a post from you. I stepped out this evening and I thought... oh no... this feels like tornado weather. I'm not sure, but that's how it's felt in the past.yolos wrote:Today was a gorgeous sunny warm day (72*F now at 7:15pm). I couldn't stay inside so I turned my compost pile. Yolos, I've been collecting small amounts of seeds all fall and winter (like a chipmunk with full cheeks).
I'm hoping to have a good season. I'm pricing compost at the moment (my pile didn't amount to much I'm afraid). I hope you have a good season too!

The last cold spell along with all the rain and snow we've had put an end to my winter garden.. cabbage, carrots, turnips, and rutabagas, all gone now..
I hope we have a chance to dry out a little this spring, its really been wet..
I'll be getting up some compost to start a few tomato seeds soon.
Found some tendersweet carrot seeds at the local walmart. Looked for
them all last fall with no luck..
