Lower South Dec 2014
Well, here we are at the end of the calendar year. Since this region runs from VA to Texas we cover a big swath of the US. But we all have that same zones 7, 8 weather that means frost and freezes do happen. I'm much farther north than most of you, but that lovely Gulf Stream runs right off shore and moderates before it swings over to Ireland and UK to help warm them up.
Other than the garlic I planted the end of Oct, I'm not growing a fall/winter garden this year. I did try to protect the roots of some plants that I have in pots by building a straw bale corral next to the southern side of my brick foundation and set the pots inside. My house sitters are keeping an eye out. My 2 strawberry beds are covered with straw.
What are the rest of you in the region doing this Dec?

We get the Gulf Stream swinging by here also, which is why I'm still harvesting seaweed, picking greens and am not under snow yet like the rest of New England.

Re: Lower South Dec 2014
I planted cauliflower, mustard greens, broccoli and some onions. I have 4x8x6 in beds surrounded by plastic chicken wire or chicken wire itself and those creepy chickens got in and at the leaves off my budding cauliflower, the scapes off my onions!! Talk about bummed, my first real winter garden eaten by chickens that have never ever bothered those boxes before. 5 yrs and not one chicken bothered my boxes. So I am quite grateful to my husband for helping our issue. We have always wanted our chickens to be free range, but now they will have to be free range in a new area. We started penning them in their own yard and will eventually fence more area for them to roam freely. The area they will go into for free roaming will be where we put our fruit trees I can protect.
I still have garlic that needs to go in and some onions I think if I didnt give those away already. The sticker says I can plant all the way till Dec. I will do that and mulch if needed.
I also missed picture taking of how the hoop house looked before it was removed to make way for a more permanent green house. I keep promising pics, I will follow up LOLOL I promise.
Stay warm
