Hi from new s m gardener!
Hi all!
Just wanted to say hi and introduce myself. My name is John. I'm 38 years old and live in brisbane with my beautiful wife renee, our 5 month old son alexander and our 2 year old staffordshire bull terrier kaylee. I stumbled across mel's book (it's called 'square metre gardening' here!) last year.
I'd never had anything to do with gardening before, but was starting to ask myself why i was mowing my back yard every 2 weeks and just throwing the grass clippings in the bin. I thought to myself, 'there must be a better way'; my yard was basically just waste land. I thought what if i could start using my back yard productively and actually start growing fruit and vegetables?
So, i've followed mel's book methodically and spent the last few months setting it all up. I've built a 1 cubic metre timber compost bin, a 1.15m x 1.15m x 0.265m timber box frame and a grid to divide the box frame up into 9 squares using mel's instructions. I've made up the mel's mix and now i'm now ready to plant my seeds this weekend!
I've taken some photos throughout the whole process so I'll try and post on the forum tonight..
Happy gardening!

Re: Hi from new s m gardener!
VERY nice! I really like your compost bin. Want to come here & build one for me, lol?
I also like that you put your box on a concrete pad. That will certainly keep the weeds out.

Welcome to the forum. Hey, aren't you going into winter now? I have a friend Down Under who's gearing up for winter and putting her garden to bed.

Re: Hi from new s m gardener!
It is starting to cool down, but we have quite a mild winter here. My plan is to plant out using the smg method and see what comes up! If a particular vege doesn't grow then I won't plant it this time next year!

Welcome to the forum! What a wonderful turn of events for the use of your space. So glad you found the book and was inspired to do something about it. Here's wishing heaps of finished compost from your new setup, and a bountiful harvest from your new SMG!
