Just Bought a Canner...
I went to a local thrift store today and found a 16qt canner. I have been looking for one for a while now. I did buy it, but I was reluctant too... Please tell me I made a good purchase...
It is a Maid of Honor.. which I have found was sold by Sears, but may have been manufactured by Presto. It does have the gauge and the weight. The seal looks to be in good shape as well. How can I tell for sure if the seal is good and what do I need to do to make sure it is safe??

Re: Just Bought a Canner...
Congratulations on your purchase. You can contact your local Extension Service about canning information or classes. They often will be able to calibrate gauges on canners.

Thank you Camprn... I have the number and will call to schedule a testing of the gauge. Thank you so much for the tip!!

Re: Just Bought a Canner...
rabelgirls, once you get the gauge checked, you can do a canner pressure check for the seal. Just get the directions/book for your canner online. Use only water, bring the canner up to the correct pressure. If it holds the pressure(follow directions for your canner)you are good to go. If it leaks, you have time to get one before canning season. Sometimes you can get the seals at a hardware store.
