Err! Not much like Disney then, Marc? What I am afraid of is that all over the world a country's folklore is being taken over by Disney and that the national folklore tales may be lost.
Re: Senseless Banter...
It's so easy to lose cultural treasures.
Disney movies tend to bore me these days. They can be formulaic, and center too much of the time around corny pop songs. If you look at the old Disney, like The Jungle Book, the songs were hilarious and developed the characters. Balou the Bear singing about "The Bear Necessities" told us all about who he was and how he thought and what some of the allure of the jungle and living in nature was. Disney movies these days often bring in "star" voices and the songs break from the action and characters to become things in themselves -- commodities to be sold, I guess. The songs are often simply about love, quite generically, and aren't very particular to the characters. For action during the songs, you often get characters fixing each other with lovey-dovey stares. You didn't see Balou the Bear singing about love with King Louie; those boys fought and snuck about and got up and danced with coconuts on their faces and fruit on their heads! That's the way to do it! But back then, Disney wasn't designing its songs to be hit singles, but parts of a movie that children would enjoy watching.
Not all Disney songs are like that these days, but a whole lot of the time, the movie grinds to a halt while some leather-lunged singer wails out a pop song at top volume.

Re: Senseless Banter...
I looked at your link and read the preview of the Grimm book. I think I want to buy the hard back. Very, very interesting comparison.
I had the record album to Sleeping Beauty, my favorite. I would sing and waltz around my bedroom. Yes, I knew how to dance the waltz.

Re: Senseless Banter...
There are some good reviews out there from the professional sites, too. Well worth reading to put the book in context.

Re: Senseless Banter...
Disney and the Moveworld in general do tend to distort things especially historical facts & con the unthinking general public that it is true .
T'is a bit like Microsoft reinventing the wheel , then declaring their terminology a world standard .
Some folk know different and will pass on the difference in the saga's to their friends , grand kids etc

Re: Senseless Banter...
Ok, who here took ballroom dancing lessons?
I did!
Waltz, foxtrot, cha cha cha…there had to be more than three in two (school) years, but I don't remember. 7th and 8th grades, with a Grand March at the end, where you invited your father. He would get so aggravated, because I always wanted to lead! But how many 7th or 8th grade boys do you know that would lead?
Oh, yeah - the polka! How could I forget? That one was the most fun.
Okay, everybody else, fess up!
(And by everybody else, I mean you, Boffer!)

Re: Senseless Banter...
I did too in college. I was a physical education major and we had to take 4 different dance classes. Modern, folk, ballroom and rhythm. It did not help me any, I am tone death. For the final exam in ballroom dancing, my partner had to count for me - 1, 2, 3, 4: 1, 2, 3, 4.martha wrote:Ok, who here took ballroom dancing lessons?

Re: Senseless Banter...
I met my wife when she was a student in the ballroom class that I was teaching.
Re: Senseless Banter...
Count me in. Fox Dance School 6th and 7th grade. Later as a phys ed class in college. Hey, I was 35 yo and didn't want to take some of the more athletic classes.
Got an A on my final exam because I could "follow" a guy who couldn't lead. Weirdest waltz you've ever seen. Throw out all you know about what it is supposed to be and just follow along.
I've also taken country and western (not line), modern (college again at age 48 ouch), Irish Ceili, tap, ballet, and middle eastern. Still do the middle eastern (belly dancing) sometimes.

Re: Senseless Banter...
Kay, that's awesome! You have to have some core strength to do belly dancing, if I am correct.
Boffer, I don't think I knew either part of that! Here I thought I would drag some unwilling admission of junior high school dance lessons out of you!

Re: Senseless Banter...
lol I had to do the junior high dance class, and it included some social etiquette, too.
The only things I remember from that class are the girls all wearing white gloves, and one piece of advice for the boys:
'A gentleman should always carry three handkerchiefs when on a date with a lady:
One for show, one for blow, and one for emergencies.'

Re: Senseless Banter...
I remember getting as far as the waltz, followed by the quickstep and foxtrot. these were the school dance on a Saturday evening. Due to a shortage of boys because they refused to dance, some of us girls had to lead with another girl. That is my excuse for not being very good at dancing. My DH was a very good dancer and I think I was a disappointment to him. We were good at smoochy dances though.

"lol We called them 'belly rubbers'!"
I don't know which I like better!
We only had to wear white gloves to the fancy dance at the end, not for the weekly lessons.

Boy, I've really missed out down here in the Bible Belt South....
I've always enjoyed watching ballroom dancing. And I got to go Latin dancing w/ friends one night. Had a blast!

There are some serious artists - if that graffiti showed up on bridge underpasses etc., our world would be a better place!

Camp, that could be fun. I've tried lifting mats of moss off of large rocks, and gluing them on some objects in the garden, but the results have been disappointing.

To cover part of an ugly fence? I didn't read the article so I don't know if it would work on wood.
