End of season: What to put on top of the mix Empty End of season: What to put on top of the mix

Hello fellow square foot gardeners: Its close to the end of the season and I was wondering if it is ok to top off all the boxes with just compost/compost blend with out the peat moss and vermiculite since I won't be planting in the winter. And then as spring time comes the will top it off with the regular 1/3 peat moss 1/3 verm 1/3 compost blend.

Thanks.

Once you've done your Mel's Mix the first time, you won't add vermiculite or peat moss again. Mel tells us to simply refresh with straight compost Very Happy

Typically, for my gardens, after I clear all debris and roots there is at least an inch or two of space from the level of the mix to the top of the box. I add enough homemade compost to fill the box to the top and mix the compost in then make the mix nice and level. then I will be ready for either fall or spring sowing.

You only need to add compost after the first mixing of Mel's Mix. So to answer you question: Yes, go right ahead and just add your compost. Save yourself some money by not having to get more vermiculite and peat moss. If you already have bought more than plan a new box. You can never have enough squares...lol!
