Newbie got his first coffee grounds.
Just went in to the local starbucks and got my first bag of used coffee grounds. Never thought I would be excited over trash.
Quick question. Will they keep for a while. Starting a worm composting bin soon.

It's not trash, it's compost fodder!

I totally understand that excitement! Old coffee grounds can get a bit furry after a while if damp. If you can fit them in the fridge or freezer that might be better.
Or maybe worms like furry...? I don't have a worm bin but I put furry things in my compost pile.

I never, ever worry about the mold in bags of used coffee grounds.

Yippee! Yes, it's exciting to go to Starbucks!! And not for the cup of coffee!
And, yes, the grounds will keep. As CC stated, maybe a little furry. And as Camprn stated, not to worry if they get moldy.
I had the colorful "dog vomit" slime grow on the grounds in my first bag. There's nothing harmful about that slime. It was just a personal decision to not put it in my first compost. I had left the bag open so the spores got to the grounds, and the remaining moisture of the grounds was enough for it to grow.
From there on, I just kept the bags closed and in the shade until I had collected enough compostable materials to build a compost pile, and let it all cook! Yes, a little furry. I also broke up the coffee pucks by gently walking on the bags barefoot until I couldn't feel any more lumps.
If I missed welcoming you, let me add my welcome.
PS: Wait until you get your first buckets of veggie and fruit culls to add.

It had been a while since I picked up coffee grounds, but I got my second bagful of the weekend this morning. I have a question to all you composters. I usually put the grounds in my working pile, but I've got a batch ready to use and I'm getting the beds ready for fall planting. Can I put this bagful into the finished compost and use right away? Or how long should I let it cook in my pile before using.

I accumulate my daily home brewed coffee grounds and put half around my garden to keep out the snails; the rest go into the compost barrels. Coffee grounds don't do much for keeping out the bunnies, but the snail trails definitely are down.

I actually sometimes work used coffee grounds right into soil or use as a mulch. They are not 'hot' and it will bring earthworms, which love coffee grounds.walshevak wrote: I usually put the grounds in my working pile, but I've got a batch ready to use and I'm getting the beds ready for fall planting.
