July in Elizabeth City

A suyo long asian cuke that is taking over. It is actually planted in a bucket located between the beds and was supposed to grow up a cage in the bucket and a small  trelles on the N side of the strawberry bed.  The beans on the trellis are blooming but not fruiting.


same cuke from the side where I put up another tomato cage trying to corral it.  Loads of blossoms, but not much fruit.  These get to be about a foot long, are very light green and have no prickles on the fruit.  Found one hiding today about 2 ft long and much too fat.

an armenian cuke also trying to take over the yard.  It is also in a bucket with a tomato cage and was supposed to share the trellis with the suyo long.  Hard to tell which is which until you see the cuke.  I have had several from this vine.


sweet potatoes outgrew their tub and took over the neighboring tub where I had harvested the garlic.  Now they are trying to grow into the grass


the superhot peppers are growing and blooming.  The jalapenos are getting to a good size and the cayenne are putting out.  Also have peppers on one of the scorpions.

not pictured is the kale and chard both of which are doing great.  the squash beds are looking pretty pitiful right now.  I've had at least 2 squash from each plant so not a total loss.  The acorn squash are holding on and getting larger and harder skinned.

Pulled up all the lettuce mix that bolted.  I have a late planting that is not quite bolting yet.  Mustard greens have had it.  I planted the first of my fall garden, 2 squares of broccoli seed.  In 2 weeks I'll plant another  2 squares and so forth.  

The beans have been a real disappointment this year.  My painted lady beans have been blooming and bees have been visiting, but no beans.  Had plenty last year.  Thinking about pulling them up and planting Kentucky Wonders.  I still have a good 3 months of growing time. Or maybe wait 2 weeks and try a fall crop of sugar snap peas.  First frost is usually mid Nov.   I have one trellis groaning with bean plants but no blooms.  Another trellis is putting out slowly.  First time to try bush beans.  Won't bother again.   Still have hope for the edamame.

What is happening in the rest of the lower south? This area has had plenty of rain, but I know the region reaches down the coast a ways and then across all the way into parts of Texas. How are all of you faring?

Do you anything extra to support the cantaloupes and watermelon? Like pantyhose?

I did last year but am trying without this year.

Yesterday and today's harvest.  Cukes, the first peppers (serrano chili and thai) tomatoes and probably the last summer squash.

I don't even like okra, but the flower is beautiful.  Planted them because it grows very tall.  Hope it will offer shade to underplanted  bok choi next month.
