Skinny Radish with Huge Leaves

This year I double dug the 4 x 4 squares, while adding about a half bag (the big ones) of vermiculite and an equal amount of compost. My soil still gets a little crusty, but it's rich and we've had a lot of good rain. I have not had to water very much at all.

The radish i pulled up today had leaves that were 18" tall. The root was was about 2" long, but only about a half inch in diameter -- no rounded bulb! According to my late April planting date, it should be ready by now. Que pasa?

No se! I finally pulled my skinny radishes. The turnips tasted better than the radishes anyway. Turnips great in salad.

Has it been really warm where you are? Over 80 degrees can stunt the bulbs.

Agreed. Heat is weird with radishes.

My true cool season planting was extra long, good girth, the whole bit, but with some bore holes here and there from....something.

My second crop was basically slammed by the laughable Las Vegas "spring", and at harvest they were all MUCH smaller, but strangely in MUCH better condition.

Go figure...

Writer, what variety of radish did you plant? Did you thin the plants out to one every inch or two?

For something as simple as radish's, they sure can be a picky bunch sometimes. Heat, climate, watering and the age of the seed all come into play. Sometimes, just buying a new .99 pack of seed solves the problem. This year I've had much better success with radish's by putting them in a shaded area with morning sun and LOTS of water Smile

Are you using fertilizers? Or just good ole Mel's Mix?

My seeds were new Champions from the American Seed Company.

From the company website: [Champion (20 days) Bright scarlet round radish with delicious, crisp, white flesh that doesn't become pithy. Thrives in cool weather.]

"Cool weather" may be the problem here -- I planted at the end of April and what is "cool" in Maryland, may not be cool enough for this radish. Guess I'll find another strain for summer plantings.

The old New Yorker in me just has not wrapped her head around planting things in the ground before April 15, which may also explain my problems with Danvers carrots and "extra early" Razzle spinach from Burpee. Any recommendations for better results in the Maryland climate?
