GG you certainly ARE a "glass is half full" gardener. I would be pretty upset by now.
Obnoxious cheer is my curse! (cue music, Don't Worry, Be Happy). Wabbit has now gotten the last pepper, but last night I got the plastic chicken 'wire' in place, so tonight I plan on putting out some new starts - have to buy, no time for pepper seeds. I think I will try the broccoli from seeds tho'. Should be plenty of time starting from seed for a fall crop.

So far Swuggs or Bwerrdy's have not been an issue - just the Siwwy Wabbit! The upside is that my neighbor, who is moving out of the rental next door, has several tomato, pepper, celery, and cuke plants that she wants to save but may not have time to prepare plots for in the 3 weeks she has before moving. I told her I have 2 empty boxes now enclosed in critter cage material that she is welcome to move her plants into if necessary. I have 20 sq ft in those boxes available, as well as another 6 sq ft available in a raised brick bed. I have also offered her my variety of buckets for putting the toms into. It all works out!

Re: GGGarden 2013
Just read today that rabbits don't normally eat carrots or root crops according to the idiots in the RSPCA ( Royal Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals )
It's never stopped then trashing field crops when they get hungry .
Still with knowledge like that is it any wonder people think of rabbits as furry little cuties. Rather than a pest creature that will clear crops faster than sheep
One horse grazes the same as 8 sheep 8 rabbits breeding once in a year will graze the same as a sheep .
8 rabbits breeding all year round will graze almost 10 horses worth of graze ..
Perhaps you need to dig for victory a bit better than Elmer

Cukes are up, however, one looks suspiciously like a watermelon (on left), but both came out of the same Cuke see packet.

Re: GGGarden 2013
I have cuke flowers
And here is my other 'cuke' plant
Both plants came from seeds in the same pack, however, I believe one plant will produce fatter 'cukes' with pink insides! There were no black seeds in the packet. It is a little bit off from where I planted the other cuke, so could have come from the compost I suppose.

Re: GGGarden 2013
Self-watering box is doing great! I know not to plant it early indoors next year to try to get a headstart on the season, as our newest cat is a seriously spazzy rocket kitty and she destroyed over half of my Carrot Week carrot sprouts. The pimientos are happy filling up the empty carrot space and the MM is working well for everything growing in there.

Mowed the lawn, then dug up the 2 potato boxes - 24 sq ft. Filled a 4 gallon bucket with spuds. Now it's time for a hot bath and my favorite drink, a BAM.

Re: GGGarden 2013
Thanks! Looking forward to som nice potato salad - can't beat the taste of homegrown spuds. I planted about 3 lbs of potatoes, got about 20 lbs in return, which includes the 'marbles' that I will add to next year's planting. Last year I planted a handful of Yukon Gold 'marbles' left from the previous year's crop and got about 10 lbs of freebie Goldies. Not bad for a free experiment! Planting 'marbles' is now standard practice when I have them. Last year everything filled out nicely and I had no teeny tiny taters.CapeCoddess wrote:BAM!

That is a lot of potatoes...if you don't mind me asking how do you plan on storing them? I planted some potatoes this year, first time, not sure how much I will get but if its a bunch I would like to know how to store them properly. Thanks!

Re: GGGarden 2013
Store?! I am the original Mrs. Potato Head. 20 lbs will be gone in nothin' flat! I am seriously considering changing up my planting scheme so next year I can use my bigger boxes for the spuds. I used 2 small boxes which are 12 sq ft each. My bigger boxes are 24 sq ft each, so I could probably do twice as many next year. Or, if I can sneak it past Hubby, I could build a few more boxes.....mschaef wrote:That is a lot of potatoes...if you don't mind me asking how do you plan on storing them? Re: GGGarden 2013
Dug up 12 squares of carrots today. Here is the haul, in an 18" roaster after scrubbing and trimming:
Here is the 4 gallons of spuds with a few Cippolini onions on top (and a curious bald kitty wrapped around the left side - note the tail at the top, yarn toy at the side, and the face in the bottom corner)
I am POOPED! I will deal with the spuds in the next few weeks. The carrots are all now sliced by the food processor and waiting in the fridge for me to have enough energy to blanch and freeze 2 gallons of sliced carrots!

GG....im almost thinking preparing and storing the harvest is more work then planning, planting and maintaining the garden......we have been dehydrating, canning and freezing the last couple of weeks......im bushed!....today as I was walking in the garden I seen a few things I could harvest but am putting it off a few more days.....cause I already have veggies on the counter that need to be taken care of ...not complaining though.....this winter we will be happy that we have some veggies to eat from the garden
happy gardening
