GGGarden 2013
Robins have been sighted, large patches of lawns are emerging from snow, and we are actually getting RAIN right now! Seedlings started indoors 4-2-13. As of right now, 8:37 pm 4-7-13, all 15 broccoli starts have sprouted, and one Amish Paste tom is bursting out! Got 3 trellises moved yesterday to the one raised bed that is up against the house and thoroughly frost-free, so I got my peas in the ground yesterday, 4-6-13. Now we are in for 3 days of rain and snow, so it will be interesting to see how long it takes for the peas to germinate.
The snow is now off the compost tumbler as well, so I put in a fresh batch of egg shells, fruit & veggie peels, coffee grounds, fuzzy yogurt, and gave it a few spins. I am going to pay attention to how long it takes to cook down, so I can try to get a system going. High hopes indeed!

6 days after starting seeds (36 cells in all) all 15 broccoli have made an appearance, along with 2 Amish Paste toms, and one Porter's Dark Cherry tom.
GG - taking any green sprouts as a sign of spring hope amid the current snow storm!

Garden Score! A friend who is downsizing gave me a coldframe and a 1'x2' self-watering planter. Planter will be used for my Carrot Week planting (indoors) and the coldframe means I may have my most successful year for hardening off seedlings!

Re: GGGarden 2013
29F this morning, but that is supposed to be it for subfreezing temps. 7-day forecast shows 40's tonight and then 50's for the rest of the week's lows. Yesterday morning I got my 6 remaining beds ready with their spring shot of compost and they are ready to plant up! This afternoon will be a busy day! Going to get seeds and potatoes in the ground and start hardening off the seedlings.

Re: GGGarden 2013
Potatoes now inground. Corn, cuke, and squash seeds inground. Broccoli and tomatoes potted up. Another 100 onions inground. Phew! I need to go back to work for a rest! It is forecast to get hot fast (froze Sunday morning, supposed to be 82 today) so I am not sure how the broccoli will do once inground, but I have it plotted to be east of the corn, so will be shaded for the afternoon.

Cor, I wish our spring sprang into action like your version GG . Here it's a mizzo 7 oC and interspersed with rain , rain and more rain . That funny golden egg yoke thing in the sky seems to have gone on his holidays .
Please post lots of pictures so I can see what I'm missing .... pretty please , with a cherry on top .

Re: GGGarden 2013
Sounds like a fantastic start to your gardening season! I really hope you get to enjoy some broccoli. I just started noticing my newly planted spinach already bolting yesterday and am thinking my cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower and lettuce won't be far behind. Sounds like many of us will have to keep our fingers crossed for at least a decent fall garden to get some cold crops this year.

I just can't help it! Giddy Spring Fever!!!
Just came in from the PM garden check: since this morning 40 more have poked thru the surface, making 42! Today must be the day for corn germination. Still under 50%, but with them all appearing in one day, I have high hopes for what tomorrow will bring. Also a day for tomato germination, as I just had to remove at least 15 little volunteer tomato sprouts on one end of the corn box. Love that they sprout, but if they are not where you want them, they are WEEDS!

Re: GGGarden 2013
OH CRAP!!! Been purposely holding off planting the tomatoes outside because temps were still getting into the 40's on occasion. Last night was the last night forecast in the 40's, planned on putting them out this weekend, but LEFT THEM ON THE PORCH OVERNIGHT AFTER A HARDENING OFF SESSION! I know they can take the temp, but may have stunted them for a bit!

"I'm going to kill the WAAAAAABBIT!" (cue Elmer Fudd)
Yesterday 3 of my 8 broccoli starts had been nibbled to nubs. When I checked this evening after work - ALL 8 ARE GONE!!!

Just glad they have left the potatoes, peppers, and tomatoes alone. I will not have a chance to do any serious 'critter-proofing' until this weekend.

Update - 3 of the 4 peppers are now gone, and it is currently POURING outside! If the rain slows down at all I will be out there with the chicken wire. No sign of nibbles on the tomatoes, onions, carrots, corn, or cukes yet.

Here is my 1x2 box of carrots - the only survivors after the kitten pounced all over the box when it was still indoors. I originally had 100% germination in the 2 sq ft, 32 carrots. They were just no match for kittenhood glee!

Here is a picture of the garden lumber score. Hopefully this weekend it will turn into a new 2-section Berkeley compost station, and if I am really ambitious, a new frame for my asparagus bed.

One of the 2 pallets in there is over 6' long, so it is going to be the back of my compost station. All I have to do is attach sides and a divider in the middle and I am done.
