Snow - do I need to replant lettuce and spinach?
Well, I went on vacation recently the day after I planted my spinach and kale. While I was gone, we got 12 INCHES OF UNEXPECTED SNOW! Crazy snow for St. Louis for this time of year. My question for you is... do I need to replant my spinach and kale? They weren't covered at all. The snow finally melted away yesterday and today I see no signs of sprouts (it's now been two weeks since I planted). Thoughts? I know they are cold-weather plants, but is snow too much??
Thanks!
Thanks!

I would say no, you'll be fine. Those seeds got covered with snow and likely brought the soil temperatures into the 30s. It probably took a while for the snow to melt, but when it did you had very wet cold soil. As the soil warms back I think they'll sprout just fine. I often sow things like spinach and peas very early in Wisconsin and some years get a layer of snow on top before sprouting. It slows things down, but they always sprout. Soil temperatures are your driving force right now.

So how are your spinach and kale? Poked through yet?

They took an extra week or so, but they have poked through and are looking good! Thanks for asking. I guess Mother Nature knows what she is doing!
