When do you suggest starting seeds indoors for zone 6A (Ohio)?

Depends on your last frost date. I'm in 5a and even tho my last frost date is now near late May, I thought May 12th a good date. The last 2 yrs our LFD was very early in May. Many crops can go outdoors up to 5 weeks before that last frost. Based on Mar 12th as my LFD this year, my plan is made.
I've already started a few things indoors; leeks, arugula, spinach and this week more greens will be started. They'll be going into my covered A-frame when they are big enuf, if the snow is gone, so I take a chance on starting things a bit sooner.
Around here I won't start cabbage, broccoli and then cauliflower til later in March.
Its all a matter of reading the charts and checking the prior years temps and making a decision. I find Mel's sowing charts in his book extremely helpful in that regard. With SFG we use so few seeds to start that losing a few to making a wrong early choice won't matter.

I'm in central Ohio. Today I was comparing the planting dates from the OSU master gardener manual to Mel's planting charts in his book. Happy to say its almost a perfect match if you use May 15th as the frost free date with central Ohio as your location. Spring planting dates will be about 2 weeks earlier for southern Ohio, and 2 weeks later for northern Ohio.
