Post  dixie 7/9/2010, 7:41 pm

My first batch of tomato seeds are nearly ready, just need to dry a bit more. If you want some, send a SASE with one stamp. PM me for my address. I'm so proud of myself for not procrastinating on this project like I usually do.

Ok my envelope is in the mail since yesterday Smile I am going to save my seeds in the freezer. What do you save your seeds in, a jar, coffee can ? I have a brandywine tomato a neighbor gave me and I harvested the seeds, for the first time Smile I have them drying now. Im very excited. I am going to take a couple of seeds from this batch and try to see if I get growth. I plan on making row covers or bed covers for my tomatoes I grow for fall and winter. I love to experiment cant wait to see if my trial of seeds worked.

I store all my individual seed packets in a zip lock freezer bag. "tomatoes as a winter crop", now that would really be something. I always get tired of eating tomatoes by the end of summer, but as soon as the last one is gone I crave them so much.

Ha-v-v...me too...it is exciting. And I am excited because you ever meet those people who won't share a family recipe? I think Dixie would be totally within her right to treat these tomatoes like that...but she isn't and it just tickles me to death. It is exciting...I am starting to think that gardening IS the foutain of youth...menatlly anyway. I find myself feeling like a little child full of wonder and excitment long ago lost everytime I am in my garden.

Tomato seeds are ready Empty Re: Tomato seeds are ready

Post  dixie 7/13/2010, 10:15 pm

Middle Mamma: I "should" start my seeds 6 weeks before last frost date, but I can never wait that long, usually start 8 weeks before. I use 4' shop lights suspended from a chain to sit as close to the tray as possible. (I use the 72 cell "greenhouses" from Lowe's and JiffyMix seed starting product to lessen chance of damping off. I also don't put the clear top on tightly for the same reason, always leaving a corner uncovered for air circulation. As soon as the seeds start to germinate I take the lid off completely & raise the light fixture a little at a time as they grow, always keeping it as close to the plant as possible without touching. I water from the bottom when the top starts to dry out. I still occasionally have damping off, but I fill a spray bottle with a VERY weak bleach solution & lightly spray the affected areas & it clears right up. When the weather settles a bit I start moving them out onto the porch, gradually into full sun during the day, bringing the trays back in at night if it will be freezing. This year when I did my SFG beds & put my jury-rigged greenhouse up, I put them in there after they were accustomed to full sun. The frosted plastic (cheap painter's drop cloth) kept them protected from the wind & any rain & they did great.

I hope this makes sense, ask if you are unclear about anything. I don't explain things too well sometimes.

All of you are so sweet. I don't get "bragged" on very often & it sure is fun. This whole SFG thing has been worth every penny buying my mix ingredients & wood. I've had successes & failures, but you learn as you go & with everyone's input on the forum, we learn from each other.

About recipes, I've only regretted once giving out one of my recipes. We have lots of fellowships at church where we take food. Most everyone is "famous" for something. I make a wicked grape salad that everyone is crazy about. I gave the recipe to one of the other ladies & she started bringing it, so I had to quit, but I just came up with something else!

I sent you a SASE for some seeds which I already named in my head 'Dixie Sweet' since they are very sweet slicing tomatoes. I want to differentiate from those that I use for sauces, etc.

I always start mine 8 weeks before last frost date, similar to Dixie.
I allow them to germinate away from light on a heat pad with a plastic cover over my soil blocks which I've spritzed with a weak green tea solution. To date I have not had ANY losses to damping off. Covering the newly planted seeds lightly with vermiculatie may have helped. As soon as they germinate, they go under the lights.
I drop the little 3/4" soil blocks into 2" soil blocks in about 5 more days when I know they are going to make it.
Tomato seeds are ready 03-28-10

When they are about 3 weeks old I transplant them to 5-6" deep air-pruning pots I make from 2-liter soda bottles where they grow for the last 5 weeks before transplanting outdoors.
Tomato seeds are ready 04-27-10
These pots are in trays so they can be watered from below. I keep moving the lights higher as they grow but only about 2" above the leaves.
This is my first year starting my own plants and I loved it. It was so easy. And its great knowing the choices of varieties are so diverse compared to buying started plants at the nursery.

Dixie what is dampening off?

And do you use special grow lights? if so what kind?

Thanks for being so helpful.

Quiltbea, I love the idea of the soda bottle pots. I always intend to repot mine to larger pots, but I never have time. I'll be retiring in February, so hopefully I can do more then.

Damping off is a fungal disease, here's a link from Dave's Garden: damping off

Dixie,
For soda bottle air-pruning pots I punch holes in the five lower lobes of the bottles.
Then I cut a very narrow slit up from the holes for about 3 inches up with a scissors.
The slits keep the roots of the seedlings from growing around in cicles or girdling the roots of the plants. When the roots hit the air, they stop.
They pop right out when I transplant them and no wacky roots to contend with that might impede growth and no root disturbance at transplanting time..
Tomato seeds are ready 05-06-10
See the slits in the sides? I use these pots for all my transplants that have to grow under the lights for any length of time.
I make use of my used meat package trays to hold water beneath after washing them thoroughly with soap and water. I water transplants from below so they can suck up whatever they need. I don't know if its just beginner's luck or the method, but I've only lost a few seedlings and that was from my own stupidity, like dropping them on the floor.

Dixie, your DH sounds like my son. If I don't keep everything boxed in a particular area in the workshop, it'll go to the dump. I, too, have to be careful where I put things.
Tip: There are now bottles that narrow near the bottom then get wider again. Do NOT use those. The transplants don't slide out well and damage can be done to the roots.
Use only the smooth-sided ones.
I'm saving new ones for next year. You can save them year to year by cleaning them in a bleach solution before storing away.
I only use the narrowing ones to fill with water and store about a dozen in the furnace room in case of a power outage and no well operating. Also to water my trays when they are under lights in the furnace room.

Hi Dixie, I didn't want to jump on the bandwagon too early but I am interested in acquiring some of your tomato seeds, if you would be willing to part with a few more.
